Relationship-Building
In-service program
The purpose of the parent education in-service program was to avail in-service training opportunities for the parents, teachers and the staff that is engaged for the smooth running of the schools activities. This will ensure that the process of leaning among the students and the running of the school administration is conducted properly.
The program provides the necessary training for the both the certified and the non-certified personnel. This will help them in acquiring, updating and enhancing the competencies that are necessary in carrying out of their educational and responsibilities needed for the support services.
The training opportunities are designed to develop professional skills and the attitudes based on different aspects affecting the child life in schools. These include, essentials for child’s development; families and the communities; working with groups that are culturally diverse; historical overview of family life; effective relationships in home, school, and community; communication and parent programs; leadership that is collaborative; programs that are school-based; home-based program
Essentials for child’s development
(Sunderland, 2003) Children are different and their development rate is also different. Many parents rush to have their children grow very fast and attain some characters at a specific age. It is not easy to change children’s growth patterns. Some children grow faster than others in various ways. These include mentally, physically and also socially.
Some considerable factors to consider in the determination of the how children behave in growing are through the tendencies they may inherit from some family members; resemblance among different members of the family affect the way the children behave. If most of the family members are tall the child may become tall at early age although this does not imply that their brains have grown.
Nutrition and good health; For instance healthy foods will encourage faster development of brain and growth of the body as well. The values of the family as a social group will influence the rate at which the child will be seen to grow. If family value something they would like their child to grow in line with that value.
The activities which the child performs; the activities performed by the children will greatly determine the growth rate of the children. Some children will begin performing some activities at early age than the others. This can be influenced by the routine the children are exposed to at their families. If the children are provided with more learning facilities at early age it is most probable that their brains will begin to develop faster than that of their counterparts who do not get the facilities.
Families and the communities
Families are the basic units that make up a society. The way the children are brought will reflect the way they will behave in the community some of the values that should be put into consideration in regard to bringing up a child to responsible in the society include discipline; discipline is very essential in a family set up. Indiscipline in the child is a disgrace to the parents and the family members of the child. Discipline goes hand in hand with academic performance of children. Children with discipline problems will have poor performance in schools because they have many things to think of such that there is little space for academic work. When a child has bad behaviors the community will view them as troublesome and they will not tolerate them in their places.
Children should be given some chores to perform in the family. However small they may be they will develop a habit in them which will be helpful to them even when they grow. Children who do not engage in family chores grow up lazy and to some extend of no use to the society.Lazy kids in performing house duties will most probably be lazy academic work hence poor performance.
When children are not given work to perform they will end up been idle and with their minds not engaged. As the saying goes idle minds are devils workshop; they will develop habit that are bad and intolerable in the society. Some of the habits may be bad company which will teach them bad behaviors which will affect them both in school performance as well as the way they live with others in the community.
A good community is developed from a good family set up. If a family is good and its members adhere to good norms it is imperative that it will produce a good generation that will serve the community well.
Cultural diversity
(Parvis, 2005) Different people have different cultures. Cultures are good and help to shape the lives of individuals. It is essentials that culture are respected in the institutions of learning as they mould the future of the learners just like the academic work does.
Culture plays an important role in the development of the children and therefore they can’t be ignored. They impact knowledge in young ones which they will follow even at old age. They help in building their characters. Character development is an essential aspect in a life of an individual.
There the school administration should work hand in hand with the parent to make sure that they develop cultures from the origins of the children in any learning program come from. This should be developed by creation of forum to promote them. In this forums the children should be given chance to show some of their cultural values and also invite older members from different cultural backgrounds as a way of improving the cultural values.
Showcasing of talents from different culture make the entire population of student in a school to feel appreciated; this will avoid discrimination in schools as well. The students will feel equal and their and hence their performance will not be affected by some effects like marginalization and discrimination.
Historical overview of family life
(Barbour et al, 2007) Family is viewed as an institution and not a biological fact founded on the natural relationships of living beings. Family entails of relationships among different people. A family setup will influence the way the children behave in the society.
If a family set up is closely knit together the esteem of its members will be boosted. When a family has wrangles or the relationship among its members is distorted the most affected group of the family are the children. Children are only termed to be innocent in any place. The wrangles will however not spare them and they will be affected psychologically.
A disturbed mind will obviously not function as expected; therefore the children will have poor performance in school if faced with problems in the family. It is hard to avoid problems in the family. The best thing to help solve this problem is by making sure that the young ones are not involved in problems that arise in the family. In case there is any problem in the family we should conceal it from the children because it may be hard for them to come into terms with the problems. Solving them is an issue as well.
The minds of the young ones are very delicate and they should not be fed with hard staff. What children go through influence their general behavior and the view of life; it is therefore health to make sure that what we make them to go through in the family life is bearable. All the members of the family should have a good relationship amongst themselves. This will in turn affect the way the children behave. It will help them in their relation with the other people in the community.
Effective relationships in home, school, and community
(Epstein et al, 2008) For there to be good outcome among the children in school, the relationship between the homes of the students, the school and the community should be sound. By home we imply many things key among them being the family members like the parents and the other siblings; the school also implies the teachers, administrators, subordinate staff and also the fellow students. The community may mean what surrounds the school; this may be the people who live in the environs of the school, the leaders of these people and also their property.
These three groups depend on one another and none can function efficiently without the help of the other. They all need one another in one way or the other. Bad relations among any of then affect the other adversely.
The parents bring up the kids and take them to the school to be trained. This means that without the parents the schools won’t students to teach. The parents also need schools where their children are to be given some skills which will help them in life. The parents can teach their children everything and therefore they need one other to function effectively. Mutual respect should exist among these two groups since exclusion of any of them will lead to malfunction of the other.
Community plays an important role in the running of the school activities. Some of these activities may include of funding of projects in the schools by donors. When funding is done by donors it helps both the schools and the parents; the parents will have saved money slated for the projects in schools which has an economic value to them. The schools will also benefit fro improved services to the advantage of the students.Peace in the community around the schools will crate a conducive environment which will enable the student to study well.Al these three groups need each other and they should relate well always.
Communication and parent programs
(Epstein et al, 2008) Communication is a very important tool if any relationship is to succeed. The communication among the parents and the management of the school should be enhanced at all times. Information that is meant should be conveyed to them in good time to make sure that they comply.
If the parents are misinformed about the issues running in the school it will mean that their participation will also be limited although they are very important parties to the running of the affairs of the school.
If a program is to run in a school the parents should be informed about it. This is because it affects their children. Also it is important to note that it is the sole responsibility of the parents to service ant arrears involved in the programs of the school. Some of the communication skills that will be effective and meaningful in the school will be:
- Open communication
- Book fairs
- Parent volunteers
Collaborative leadership
(Epstein, et al 2008) Collaborative leadership means that all the concerned parties in the running of the affairs of the school should be engaged in the leadership of the school. The activities which take place in the school should be done with the consultation of the members. The most essential members who should be involved in the running of the school affairs include the parents, teachers and the community at large. Collaboration among the teachers will create a good environment for the student both at home and at school. When there is collaboration among the parents, teachers and the community in the leadership there will be efficient communication. This in return leads to easy and quick solution of problems if they arise.
This collaborative leadership will increase transparency in the running of the affairs of the school every one will feel part of the school and the students learning process will run smoothly. The community which include donors to projects in the school need to be part of the leadership of the school so that they can know how the money they give for the projects is utilized.
Collaborative leadership can be made possible by creating committees for running of school projects. The constitution of these committees should include the community, parents and the school management.
Collaboration can be effective among the members if the following tools are used:
- Parent/teacher notes
- Parent orientation
- School festival
- Parent/student handbook
- Home visit and telephone calls
School based programs
School based programs are the programs that are initiated by the school management. These activities are conducted in schools and their main aim is to ensure that the students affairs are taken care of both academically and the co-curricular activities. Some of the activities that need to be done include academic fairs whose aim is to boost the academic of the students. They should be organized frequently by the concerned teachers depending on the subject of interest.
Co-curricular activities like games should be conducted also because the students have different talents. This will make sure that the different students exploit the different talents which they possess.Teachers should work hand in hand with the management of the school to ensure that the student’s potential is fully exploited.
Home based programs
These are some of the programs which are initiated by the parents at home. Their main aim is to boost the academic value of their children. They mostly happen when dealing with disadvantaged children. The parents put extra effort to ensure that their children who are less fortunate attain a good quality of education.
Some children rights are abused for example you will find that some kids are not given equal rights to access educational facilities. Therefore it is the initiative of the parents back at home to ensure that their kids are given the right to access quality education. This will help them in later years of their life.It is a collective responsibility of the parents at home to ensure that their kids behave well and engage in activities that morally accepted.
