Master’s Prepared Nurse
What is the difference between being a nurse with a nursing degree qualification and one who has a master’s qualification?
To be a nurse means that you have made a choice to take up responsibility of caring for someone. A patient and his or her next of kin place their confidence in you as the nurse. It is important therefore that the nurse is well experienced and trained to handle the various patients that are assigned to them. A registered nurse with a standard college degree may lack adequate exposure to handle the different types of patients assigned to her. A master prepared nurse on the other hand has the advantage of specializing in a specific field of nursing (American Association of College of Nursing, 2011).
Fields such as child care or adult care are among the many options that nurse can select. After graduation the masters prepared nurse will have specialized in a specific field of nursing care and delivery. S/he will be better placed to offer care to the patients in her specialty. A master’s prepared nurse is more experienced than a general nurse. With experience the occurrence of medication and medical errors during care and delivery significantly reduces.
What unique contributions have you made?
There is need for nurses to specialize in their preferred fields so as to ensure that they meet the needs of the patients. The master education thus guarantees that the patients and their next of kin are confident of the service and the capabilities of the professionals in charge of them. A master education also guaranteed that I received quality graduate education that enabled me to execute various job descriptions.
A master education in nursing is necessary for those professional nurses that desire to have advanced skills (American Association of College of Nursing, 2011). Some of the titles that nurses can acquire after completion of their education include nurse-midwife, nurse anesthetist and a clinical nurse specialist. I chose to specialize in the midwifery unit and I believe my experience and professionalism will service hundreds of families.
Plan of action in the next five years?
Currently, I am the nurse in charge of the midwifery department in our health care facility. I am in charge of many other nurses who work in the midwifery experience. Whereas others are masters prepared nurse, others are in training. I thus take the responsibility of ensuring that they receive proper hand on training when at the facility. In five years time, I hope to establish my own midwifery centre. I come from a minority community and I believe that by establishing a midwifery centre in my community I will be able to serve many citizens.
The ability to give consultations and advice to expectant mothers and new mothers on proper child care is crucial in minimizing mortality rates. Focus will also be on reaching out to expectant mothers and advising them on proper diet, the need for exercise and living a healthy and positive lifestyle so as to promote their health and that of their children.
What types of experience, education, certification, and organizational participation will you need?
To successful run this health facility I will need financial assistance from donors to ensure that we have adequate equipment and facilities to run. I hope to liaise with the health facility am working with right now to make the midwifery centre a reality among my community. Operating like some sort of branch of this facility I will be able to access qualified administrative and health care professional to assist in management and running of the organization.
