Introduction

In the recent past, we have seen numerous advances in both technology as well as business communication. Several years ago, people in business would engage their clients by way of letters as well as face to face meetings. However, the modern day has brought with itself significant and revolutionary changes as far as business communication is concerned.


The current trends in business communication

According to Hartley et al. (2002), business communication can be defined as any kind of communication at the organizational level designed to promote a service, a product, an idea or even establish partnerships so as to enhance organizational or business activities. At my current workplace, business communication plays a number of diverse roles. To begin with, business communication has helped in the enhancement of all the functions in the organization. That is, through business communication, the organizational functions at my workplace including staffing, controlling, planning as well as selling and reporting are coordinated in a better way and with hat comes efficiency at the workplace. Guffey wt al. (2009) notes that business communication is also critical when it comes to the execution of basic management functions by both the middle level managers as well as the top management. At my workplace, business communication plays an important role as far as the coordination as well as direction of activities by the two level of management is concerned.


It is also important to note that through forum boards at my workplace, which taken to be a method of business communication, individuals have been able to post data instantly in a centralized location. Business communication also enhances the interaction between us and our clients.When it comes to the management of activities, I would say business communication has come in handy. For instance, through the use of emails which are essentially a method of business communication, I have been able to cut down on time wastage as email brings about a better way to communicate instantly in a written format without having to leave my desk. Also, video conferencing which is yet another method of business communication today allows my workmates and I to save on time as well as resources whenever we want an interactive session with the headquarters or other units located kilometers or even miles away.


With this in place, more is completed or accomplished over time due to the time saved. Further, it is easier for me to maintain records which can be retrieved in an easy way much later for future references i.e. for auditing purposes. When it comes to the trends I have observed in my workplace and the resultant message types, it is important to note that the adoption of emerging technology as far business communication is concerned has been largely commendable. Namita (2009) notes that superior business communication practices are largely seen s a competitive advantage in the current day and age. At my place of work, devices including personal digital assistants, teleconference facilities as well as wikis are increasingly being used to cut costs, enhance productivity as well as improve the level of communication with customers. Further, business communication is being used at my workplace as a way of sourcing repeat customers by use of follow-ups which have been identified as critical for referrals for enhanced profitability.


Conclusion

It is important to note that effective business communication is the central pillar of a business. Therefore, for any business to remain relevant in today’s increasingly competitive business environment; there is great need to effectively manage the business communication system.
