Research Design on Provision of Home Healthcare
There are various research designs that can be applied in different researches. However, some are more suitable for some researches compared to others, because each research design and methodology has its own advantages and disadvantages. These designs structure and systematize the research activities. The choice of method is important because it affects results obtained and may determine how one concludes the findings (Shuttleworth, 2009). There are two approaches used in most researches and these are qualitative and quantitative research designs. The choice method depends on information desired, the cost of design, ethical issues, reliability of information to be obtained and the feasibility of the study (Shuttleworth, 2009).
Qualitative research is mainly used by researchers wishing to study human behavior, habits and choices. The method may be useful in helping determine why people prefer home healthcare in place of hospital care and why they prefer this kind of choice so as to enhance it for more people, because it will enhance affordability. This may be important as a solution in present day economy where healthcare has become very expensive. It assesses popularity and choices. The method acts as a precursor to quantitative research (Qualitative Research, 2010). It establishes whether there is significance in the research and paves way for quantitative research, because it will be used to formulate the required realistic and testable hypothesis. Therefore, being a preliminary research in this area the best choice should be qualitative research. The method is associated mostly with surveys. The design also saves a lot of time and money compared to its quantitative counterpart, and thus is most appropriate (Shuttleworth, 2009). Additionally, it is a flexible method and easier to design.
The qualitative design chosen will use the following questions to establish the truth about what is anticipated. Firstly, the research will be working towards obtaining data to answer the question as to whether more people preferred home healthcare instead of care within medical facilities. Thereafter, if the preference is as anticipated (that there is a higher preference for home healthcare instead of hospital care) then the research will go a head to in trying to find out why most people prefer home healthcare and what their preferences were. The preferred methodology for this qualitative research shall be surveying. The survey may prove important because it will sample many people across different strata of economy and thus it will be more representative and true about the picture on the ground.
This survey study is intended to explain the phenomenon of rising home healthcare compared to the reducing hospital care. The research also intends to determine the reasons that influence the occurrence of this phenomenon and its prevalence among people of various income groups or different neighborhoods. Through the experiment the popularity of home healthcare will also be explained, as well as the factors that contribute to the prevalence and preference of the phenomenon. The fact that it has proved useful in hard economic times, where people cannot afford medical care at hospitals the research will also seek to learn how it can be enhanced. This is because it will prove very useful in helping the poor people or those average incomes as well as those with long term illnesses that are manageable so that they will be able to easily and cheaply acquire home healthcare (Council Report, 1990).
