Paradox
The Wall of Education
In 2009, Liu Hui, a 15-year-old little girl studying in one of the boarding schools in Sichuan province, committed suicide because of her teacher’s “authority”. According to her mother’s description, Liu Hui was a lively girl during her childhood and became isolated and wordless since she started her education in this boarding school. As the scene in the video, Liu Hui was always being laughed at by her teacher because of her silly words in her essay writing. Actually, she is only one of the victims out of the many students subjected under miserable education system which has invisibly formed a hierarchical system where educators are the game rulers. Education has been emphasized by many teachers and parents as the only way of reaping economic benefits.
Yet college degrees are not a prior necessity for many jobs. In the United states, there is an expectation of 30 jobs which are to grow in the next decade at a very fast rate. Only seven of these jobs will require a bachelor’s degree. This is according to the Bureau of Labor statistics. That is why economist Richard K. Vedder calls for alternatives in the education system. He says, “It is true that we need more nanosurgeon than we did 10-15 years ago.” As a matter of fact, the increasingly thing we need is much more major surgery of the current education system. In Pink Floyd’s “The Wall,” the little boy is held up in the wall which is set up by his boarding school and the teachers. Gradually, he finally sets up a wall around himself.
Through him, we can visualize a social phenomenon from this story. The boy looks a the school system as an industry which processes students with its laws an strict authority. As they chant the redemption song of not wanting education any more, they walk like zombies into machines of chopping them in to minced meat just like sheep. In China, one side of the education system is of esteemed educators, prestigious university ranking boarding with unbeatable academic authority while the other side are venal and greedy educators, bribing professors, and are after fantastic benefits. No one could not but admit that education is paradox itself; educators highlight people-oriented education. Education is becoming a competition among educators. The educators are pursuing their “political achievement” at the cost of innocent students instead of serving an example for them. Most importantly, each role in education system should be equal. A teacher should not be the person who is standing higher than student this is because there is no difference between the essence of character of teacher and students.
No teacher should laugh at a student’s work we see in a scene of the video. Inversely, student could challenge the authority of teachers. It is only when the educators are aware of this point that they should look at their students horizontally rather than look down at them. Equality of education should be established so that. Once there is equality in the education system, the wall of the education will be broken down and students will regain their freedom to learn in its true sense.Selecting the superior and eliminate the inferior is always the conventional principle in our society. Enlightened and defective systems of education finally are substituted. If the education system will not be changed, students from the bottom of the system will rebel and cause severe damage to the school facilities. This is an aspect seen in the video which we finally see the wall of education collapsing under pressure. This is a prediction of the future of education that is currently oppressing the students.
