Is The Media The Main Cause Of Eating Disorders In Women

 Introduction

Most people have blamed the media for causing eating disorders in women. Eating disorders cause various types of infections that can be controlled by health easting habits. The media causes eating disorders among women through advertisements, modeling etc. The thesis statement is that media portray of women is the major cause of eating disorder in women. This paper analyzes whether eating disorders in women result from media.

How media causes eating disorders

Most people have carried out research to determine if the media is the major cause of eating disorders among women (Santrock, 2006).The media causes eating disorders among women through modeling advertisements. Most media advertise modeling information on televisions, radios and magazines. Most wsomen have always wanted to acquire child like images like models. The media portrays slim bodies as the perfect bodies for modeling (Katzman &Pinhas, 2005). Most models presented on the television, magazines are always slim and women have always admired them. This makes women to develop eating disorders as they want to achieve the modeling body (Wildermuth &Gould, 2009). Most women worry about their bodies and do anything like dieting to achieve a child like image. They fear getting fat and distorting the body image (Robert-Mc-Comb, 2001). The audience is not aware that the models are constructed so as to achieve modeling bodies. Most models undergo plastic surgery to achieve perfect bodies for modeling. Thus, the audience gets the wrong information from the media.

Children learn how to maintain thin bodies from their mothers. Many mothers spend time worrying how to develop thin bodies. The children learn that thin bodies are ideal for modeling from their mothers. Most researchers have found out that young children aged 6 years get eating disorders. This is because mothers influence young children (Robert-Mc-Comb, 2001).In addition, media causes eating disorders through diet advertisements. The media contributes to eating disorders through discrimination and dieting (Byerly &Ross, 2006). Most media like televisions, radios and magazines air information on how to maintain good bodies. The media insists that people should have thin bodies so as to remain health. This leads to discrimination of fatty people. People who are fat develop eating disorders as they try to achieve thin bodies and childlike images. The obsession of thin bodies has led to increase in eating disorders. The audience does not realize that the media is using them to achieve high sales. Women use wrong methods to achieve thin bodies like dieting. The methods lead to increase in eating disorders (Byerly &Ross, 2006).

Conclusion

The media is the major cause for increased eating disorders among women and young girls. This is through television shows and advertisements. Most television shows air information about loosing weight and how to become beautiful. This forces women to use wrong methods to achieve perfect bodies. The audience does not filter what is being aired. Thus, the media is the main cause of eating disorders among women and young girls.
