Usability Spectrum
The issue of usability is requires the definition of the measure and the people responsible for the definition of the measure of usability. In the healthcare settings, usability is proposed by the ONC as being measured and issued by the government. In this context, usability should be an ensured in contexts like ensuring that Electronic Health Records cause no harm to people and more.
In fact, usability is more should be more than just safety, it should encompass the standard way to assess effectiveness in terms of success and failure, the efficiency which is time to completion and the level of satisfaction while applied in various use. In usability again, the definition of the design is should also be ensured. Some argument also has it that it should be the responsibility of the usability expert while some parts of usability should simply be left to the market to decide.
The balance between the ease of use and training for doctors I believe is at the point of interaction of the doctor’s perception, behavior, and computer software. The ease of the software usability and the perception of the doctor on the same are key factors for training and use of usability of any software. Given that most people are used to Windows and Linux, it is hard to measure the IU. It is also seen that the doctors training and use for usability should be defined by the user and not the software.
To enhance their learning and using of new software, it is recommended that the physicians maintain an open mind and accepting the imperfectness associated with majority of the newly released products. The use of a software is different in other applications as compared to its use in the medical field and so training and use should focus on these two issues.
