Reflection Journal-Exceptional Children and Special education

 Introduction

Table of Contents

‘Exceptional Children’ highlights issues about the educational needs of children who may be different from other children. If the extent of differing warrants individualized, specially desinged mode of eduction for a child; then that child can be referred to as exceptional. The text defines the need for specialized education for exceptional children in society. It also categorizes exceptional children according to the type and extent of disability or impairment that prompts the need for special education. The legal aspect and origin of special education as well as the government’s legislations (laws) pertaining to exceptional children are also highlighted in the writing. The text further details how special education is diseminated  and the challenges that special education teachers have to encounter in their effort to educate exceptional children.

Exceptional Children’s Content Application to Classwork and Instruction

As an educator diseminating special education in a classroom i would have to individually determine each child’s disability and extent. Thereafter, I would specially design a tailor-made way of teaching that would befit each child according to their disabilities. This would be essential because each exceptional child has his/her own special need that makes him/her unique in terms of how s/he can can learn (Heward, 2002).   I would also integrate the education process with research and contnous monitoring as reccomended in the text. The research and monitoring is meant to serve the purpose of trying to understand how each child responds to particular modes of teaching that will be desingned according to the child,s needs. Through the process I will also keep records of each child’s performance and special needs. The recording will help in making inferences for future cases of children that may have similar disabilities (Heward, 2002).
