Dear Editor
I’m writing with reference to the increase number of road accidents due to alcohol abuse among the youths. Recent studies indicate that the number one cause of deaths among the teenagers and the youths in general is road accidents due to driving under the influence of alcohol. It is the responsibility of the government to ensure that it introduces new stringent measures with regards to the sale of alcohol to minors. In hospitals today many of those confined to the facilities due to fatal injuries such as spinal injury and broken limbs are teenagers who were involved in car crashes after a drinking spree.
Parents should also be strict with their children paying more attention to their lifestyle and the kind of friends that their children associate themselves with. The freedom accorded to the youths should be limited with the parents determining their authority and constantly supervising their children. The society should also open up to the youths on the danger of taking alcohol which will not only focus on road accidents but also long term complications such as alcohol related illnesses as well as addiction. The government should introduce strict punishment to those found driving under the influence of alcohol. Such measures include: fine and detention in cells for a specific period as well as revocation of driving licenses to the youths found drinking and driving.
The intervention of the government and parents taking up the responsibility of monitoring their children are two main ways that will minimize the increasingly worrying trends of road carnage due to youths drinking under the influence of alcohol. Such interventions are the only sure way to ensure that a whole generation of youths is not wiped out due to alcohol related road accidents.
