Types of Claims
A claim can simply be defined as a statement that an individual expects others to accept as true. There are several types of claims. For example claim of fact can be proven by facts(Rottenberg, 2009) for instance Over 2000 American citizens lost their lives and over 5000 were injured in the September 11 terrorists attack.
Claim of value focus on arguments of morals and aesthetics (Rottenberg, 2009). For example According to the Christian religion it is wrong to lustfully admire someone else’s wife. The problem with a religious claim is that it is not easy to define when some is lust fully admiring another and when she/he is not. Example 2: capital punishment is the best way to punish habitual criminals.
A claim that focuses on policies advocates for change (Rottenberg, 2009). For instance President Obama government should improve the health care system in the country. Claims can also be analyzed according to facts, belief, opinions and prejudice. A belief of claim is similar to a claim of value that is based on personal faith and morals, for instance Abortion is wrong as it denies a child a chance to live.
Claim of prejudice focuses on insufficient evidence that however can be tested (Rottenberg, 2009). For instance more than 50% of senior citizens beyond age 65 require hearing aid. This is mainly an assumption in which the speaker can not prove the statement he/she is making.
Broadly speaking a fact can be verified as the objective reality, information that is taken to be factual is believable due to the fact that it can be tested and proven. A belief on the other hand is generally a proposition or an idea that an individual accepts as true though it can hardly be proven. So can the existence of some biblical experiences be explained? For instance the concept of the deadly attacks that occurred to the Egyptians as Moses tried to free the Israelites from slavery.
