Reflection Journal; Human Exceptionality

    a) Existence of individual suffering from human exceptionality in our society is a reality of life, one that everybody needs to accept. The book Human Exceptionality: School, Community, and Family by Hardman, Drew, & Eagan (2009) has focused on the critical role that professional such as; educators, psychologist, counselors and health practitioners should play in ensuring that exceptional individuals live normal lives. One key point expressed in this reading is that people should view exceptional individuals beyond their exceptionality. People should understand that these individuals are just like the others and need to be given similar opportunities to learn and develop. Through the case studies in this book we are able to learn of the challenges that people with exceptional needs and their family go through in their daily lives. This reading therefore emphasizes inclusion of people with human exceptionality conditions into the society and helping them and their families to live normal lives. This book demonstrates how professional can ensure inclusion of exceptional individuals at various levels of their lives including childhood, transition and adulthood.  Another key point is that, in order for professionals to understand how to interact with exceptional individuals they must learn about this condition. The book explains about various classification of exceptionality, its causes and how professional can be able to respond it. This book has explained about severe and multi disabilities, autism, brain injuries, hearing and vision loss and learning and physical disabilities. The book also portrays the important of early intervention in the lives of exceptional individuals.

b) The lessons I have learnt from this content are very useful in my teaching profession. First I have understood the challenges that persons with disabilities and their families go through and this has helped me to develop a different attitude towards them. I now see the importance of providing a welcoming atmosphere in my classroom for people with special needs. The reading has also enlightened me about the different classes of human exceptionalities. Through learning about the autism, brain injuries, learning and physical disabilities, I am now in a position to identify students suffering from any of these and recommend necessary action. This reading also provides us with various aspects of dealing with and working with people who are exceptional. The case studies and stories inside have enlightened us on how we can interact with exceptional individuals without making them feel different. Through this knowledge I can now work better with exceptional people and ensure that they experience effective learning and development. This reading has also proposed various techniques and technologies for ensuring effective inclusion of exceptional individuals into the society. This has made me better equipped to deal with cases of human exceptionality in my class.
