According to Corey Robin, the foundation for different political, social and legal aspects is terrorism. We live in a world where terrorism has to be considered prior to making choices ranging from political to travel plans. Due to terror, fear has transformed into a fundamental aspect of human life. It is essential to gain an understanding regarding the political aspect of terror for the purpose of gaining some critical distance between the self and the silent assumptions. This is the sole purpose of Robin’s text concerning terror as a political and societal aspect.

I believe the key objective of terror is to trigger fear that paralyzes the urge to decline to the objectives of the person responsible for initiating the terror. It is essential to distinguish between terrorism and terror. While terrorism possesses a moral or political facet, it is merely natural for unlawful terror to be considered evil. Additionally, terror as a term revolves around a wide spectrum of human cruelties ranging from the use of executions by Stalin to undercover assaults by groupings such as the Basque separatists, not forgetting genocide and ethnic cleansing.

Robin presents the thoughts of different philosophers and their views concerning fear and terror. Montesquieu is one of the philosophers, who held an entirely different view towards political fear. According to Montesquieu, fear is a not a form of power that was ubiquitous in virtually all political systems but rather, it is an instrument of political order. While Hobbes viewed fear as a political order, Montesquieu held the belief that terror solely fulfilled the wants of a savage despot (pg 52).
