Introduction
Death of salesman is a play written by Arthur miller in 1949.The story revolves around Willy, Billy and Happy. The protagonist in the story is Willy. Willy does not succeed as a business man and he returns home after failing in a business trip. The story analyzes the life experience of Willy as a business man and also the effect of old age. The author has analyzed a wide range of themes in his work. For example, the author analyzes the psychological effect of the characters on relationships. He also analyzes the psychological effect on gender issues. The separating is a story written by John Updike. The story revolves around Richard and his wife Joan. The story analyzes Richard and Joan marriage problems. The author has analyzes various themes in the study. For example, the author analyzes the theme of relationships. The author examines the relationship between the couples and their children. The couples find it hard to live together and also the children are not able to accept their parent’s separations. The thesis statement is analyzing relationships and their psychological effect on the death of a salesman and the separating. This paper analyzes the play the death of a salesman and the story the separating.

Relationships in the death of salesman and separating and their psychological impact
Arthur and John have analyzed various themes in the play the death of salesman and the separating. First, Arthur examines the relationship between Willy, Billy and Happy. Willy and his children find it hard to relate well. This is because of his mental degeneration. Willy has a made degeneration that affects his normal life as he is not able to think well and socialize with other people. Will just talks to himself and also finds it difficulty to make the right choices. In addition, Billy and Happy are not able to cope with their father because he constantly blames them for not succeeding in life. These forces the brothers to cheat their father that Billy is planning to make a business proposition the next day. This is in order to make their father happy and relate well with him. Moreover, Billy and Happy are not able to relate well with their mother as evidenced in the story (Miller 2007). The mother shouts at Billy and Happy after returning home instead of welcoming them. Also, the father and the mother do not have a good relationship as the mother and the father argue often. This is shown by Willy’s arrival at home from the hotel. Willy finds the mother and his sons arguing and joins them. The bad relationship between the family members leads to death of their father as Bill hung’s his father Willy. Further, John analyzes the poor relationship between Richard and Joan. Richard and Joan are not able to live together. The poor relationship between the couples has led to breakage of their marriage. The couples do not enjoy each other love and thus find it hard to relate well as married people. The marriage ends after Richard leaves. The poor relationship between the parents also affects their relationship with the kids. The parents are no longer open with their kids and are unable to explain why they separated (Updike 2009).
Moreover, the writers have examined the psychological impact on presentation of the relationship of the character. First, Richard and Joan relationship between the characters has a psychological impact on the children and them. The parents are not able to tell their children the reason for their separation and this affects the kids as they want to know. This is evidenced by Richard and Joan. Richard is not able to control himself when revealing the reason for their separation and cries constantly. On the other hand, Joan remains calm. The children also react to the news differently (Updike 2009). For example, the daughters stay calm while the son is negatively affected by the news as he does not live his life normally. He finds it hard to accept the reason why his parents separated and keeps questioning his father why they separated. On the other hand, Willy, Happy and Billy and their mother have a bad relationship and this affects them psychologically. For example, Willy finds it hard to accept that his sons are not successful in life and continues to force Bill to become a sales man (Miller 2007). Also, the sons are not able to understand their father’s condition and always conflict. Additionally, will is not able to know whether his son Billy has forgiven him or not when he hung’s himself. The mother is also psychologically affected by the poor relationship between the sons and their father. The mother experiences psychological distress and this forces him to confront the sons (Miller 2007).
The relationships of the characters in the two stories are similar. This is because the characters in both stories face numerous challenges in their lives that affect their relations. For example, Richard and Joan are not able to have a positive relationship and this leads to breakage of their marriage. On the other hand, Willy, Billy, Happy and their father have a poor relationship and this affects the family negatively. The poor relationship between the characters in the two stories is as a result of differences in opinion. The characters have different views about life. For example, Joan and Richard reason differently and hence the reason Richard leaves (Updike 2009). Joan does not leave the marriage as he considers it important and also avoid affecting the children negatively. However, Richard does not see the marriage important and does not consider the impact of their breakage on the family. Also, Billy, Willy, Happy and the mother have different beliefs. Willy believes that his sons should be successful in life. For example, he forces Billy to become a salesman. On the other have, the sons have different belief as Happy and Billy do not want to become salesman, but cheat the father that Bill was not able to become a salesman because he ruined his father’s life by making him fail (Miller 2007).
Conclusion
In conclusion, the authors have explored the relationship between the characters in the play and the story. The authors examined the relationship between Richard and Joan and their children. The parents do not have a good relationship and this affects their marriage and children as it leads to psychological distress. Also, the relationship between Willy, his wife and children is not good as they struggle to maintain a positive relationship. The poor relationships result from difference in beliefs. The characters have different views about life. For example, Joan and Richard have different views about their marriage. Though they experience marital problems, Joan does not opt to leave her marriage, but she continues to cope with the problems. Richard decides to quit the marriage. Willy and his family have different beliefs as stated above.
