The History of Soccer:
Soccer, also known as association football, began more than 2,000 years ago in Europe, ancient China, Rome and parts of Central America Helmer S. Diana, Owens Tom (2000). Many people claim that soccer first began in England, but it was England that transformed soccer to what the British and many other people around the globe call “football,” the sport we know today. The English gets accredited with initiating the first uniform rules for the game, including forbidding tripping opponents and penalties for touching the sphere with hands.
As the sport urbanized, more rules and regulations got implemented such as; the first penalty kick got introduced in 1891. In 1913 FIFA became a member of the football association board of Great Britain. Yellow and Red cards got introduced during the 1970 world cup final. In addition, more recent changes have emerged such as a goal keeper getting banned from deliberate back passes in 1992 and tackles from behind becoming red-card penalties in 1998.
Football is a competition done by two teams, each having eleven players with a spherical ball. In the turn of the 21st century, the sport got played by more than 250 million players in over 200 countries around the world.
The Game play:
The sport is the world’s most popular game, always attended by spectators in full capacity. The sport is played on a rectangular ground of grass or green artificial turf. The goal posts are attached at the middle of each of the short ends, with nets attaching a cover behind the posts. The intend of the match is to score by driving the ball to the opponent’s goal post. A goal keeper is the only team member permitted to handle the ball with his arms or hands, unless when the ball is of the field and the player is required to restart by a hand throw. However, the other players use their kicks and occasionally use other parts of the body such as the head or torso and specific parts of their legs.
In every soccer match, the referee (the controller of the match) uses a weasel to direct the match. Furthermore, he is in charge of beginning and ending of the match in 90 min. As if not enough, the referee has the power to penalize any player who does bleaches any rule of the game. The players get divided into three categories such as; the defenders, mid fielders and strikers. The defenders stay near their goal post to protect the goal post and the goal keeper while the mid fielders give passes to the strikers as they drive the ball forward against their opponents. Additionally, the strikers complete the object by scoring into t heir opponent’s goal posts.
The players that score the most goals by the end of the game win the match. In case, the score is tried at the end of the match, either the referee declares extra time or a penalty shootout or the game is declared as a draw. The extra time is given to find if one of the teams would make a difference of one extra goal. When the teams fail to make the difference a penalty shootout the referee declares a penalty shootout. The penalty shootout gets done by all the players including goal keepers until one team defeats the other with more scores. Soccer as the world’s most popular game has millions of supporters around the world.
Today many countries have joined the world cup federation, where they participated after every four years. Since time in memorial, world cup competitions have always taken places especially in the developed countries such as China, Germany, Russia and Britain. However, as new developments and popularity of the game continues to increase developing countries such as Brazil have grabbed the opportunity and hosted world cup in their countries. Recently, the world cup tournament for the first time landed on the African continent South Africa in the year 2010. This revolution discloses the extent to which soccer has popularized its self around the globe. Additionally, the diversification of the game has created an opportunity to exploit new talents around the globe.
European soccer federations among other nations have taken the initiative to promote soccer through searching for new talents around the world; hence establishing soccer as the world’s excellent sport played most of the countries in the world today. According to Murray (1998) soccer has played an enormous role in promoting peace initiatives in most of the countries waging war against each other. Countries such as Northern and Southern Korea in the past years were not relating well.
However, through this sport the countries interact and form ally to compete; hence resolving the indifference cases between them. Surprisingly, most of the countries promote soccer tournaments more than other types of sports. For example, Britain as one of the countries with quite a number of local soccer teams, supports those teams with the fund to keep on the popularity of the game. Football/soccer is among the well paying sports around the world. A player can earn more than $150, 000 UD in a week, which makes several players take up soccer as their careers.
