Evidence shows that the institute of medicine’s 2010 report on the future of nursing focused on US healthcare sector that deals with the future and strategies that nurses have towards developing the desired future. Research shows that the main focus of US healthcare industry is to develop ways that help the US citizen’s access affordable and quality healthcare all the time. It is the right of each and every person to have quality and affordable healthcare services. Achieving the above goal was difficult and that made the current restructure of the healthcare industry in order to develop strategies positive towards the vision.Evidence shows that nurses are at the crucial point when it comes to the provision of healthcare services to patients.
According to statistics, nurses are nearly 3 million in US alone who serve in different healthcare areas. It is the largest healthcare workforce that focuses on the provision of quality services to patients. The current healthcare system is under change where new legislation in order to develop appropriate strategies for handling patients. Such changes translate to demands on the healthcare professionals. Enacted into law in 2010, the affordable care act (ACA) aims at increasing the number of people under the insured healthcare sector in US. It is through the new law individuals who were not able to access insurance healthcare gets the opportunity to join those insured. The 32 million people who are expected to the insurance healthcare require extra services. It will bring an impact on nursing professional simply because more nurses and nurses with skills will be required to provide services, (Reinhard & Hassmiller, 2011).The IOM report will bring change in the healthcare industry. This essay will focus on the impact that the nursing 2010 IOM report will develop. We have three main impacts namely impact on the nurse’s role as a leader, education, and impact on practice.
The impact of the IOM report on nursing education
The IOM report requires nurses to have higher levels of education in order to serve in the changing nursing industry. With the current healthcare nursing environment, practitioners are required to go for quality health care training. These requirements focus on improving services that nurses have for the patients. Nurses will be required to use a seamless academic progression in order to achieve required education to serve patients as expected. Since the number of patients who will require health care services is expected to increase with 32 million according to ACA, nurses must be educated in order to ensure that they have addressed patients in the right manner, (Institute of Medicine, 2011).Nursing health care industry is in the process of developing complex information management systems for the purpose of patients. This translates that nurses will require complex information skills in order to uses this system. The IOM report therefore calls all nurses or individuals who join this profession to go for high level of nursing education to get prepared on how to use these systems.
Nursing industry will change to an environment of multi disciplinary where nurses will eventually start working with teams from other healthcare departments. Since most of healthcare professionals such as social workers, physicians, pharmacist, and therapists hold high level of education, nurses are required to get high level of education that will help them interact with such people accordingly, (Institute of Medicine, 2010).Evidence shows that with the increased rate of the aging population, services from nurses will be highly required. Nurses will in the near future become primary care providers in nursing health care industry thus they must have relevant skills and knowledge in order to provide required services. Patients will require advice from nurses on how to manage chronic illnesses thus nurses must have prepared enough to provide services that provide positive results. Professionals in the nursing industry will have to get higher education to help them develop critical decisions when providing care to the sick, (Reinhard & Hassmiller, 2011).
The impact on nursing practices
The future of nursing in respect to increase on people in insurance healthcare indicates that nurses must practice ways of addressing the patient’s problems. The recent IOM report focused on the roles that nurses should play to the healthcare system. Since healthcare system is under change, nurses must play vital roles to ensure that goals and objectives of the said change are achieved. Evidence shows that most nurses are unable to respond effectively to the current changing in healthcare settings because of the barriers that exist.
The IOM report on nursing addresses on ways to overcome these barriers and help nurses develop appropriate directions on the change that nursing system plans to develop, (Institute of Medicine, 2011).Nurses have the required potential to provide quality services, but nursing industry has failed to tap the required potential. Existence of barriers in the nursing industry is the main cause on why nurses are unable to practice as required. A number barriers affecting nurses has put them off towards their practices. Some of the barriers that affect nursing practices include high turnover rates in nurses, barriers on policy and regulatory, improper strategies on transitioning nurses from their learning institution to practice, and challenges of the aging workforce and barriers of the demographic, (Institute of Medicine, 2010).
The impact of the IOM report on the nurse’s role as a leader
Nursing professional is the only healthcare professional that has different entry levels that lead to the same thing. In order to redesign healthcare system, nurses must get required education in order to become full partners with physicians for a better nursing environment. Nurses will not substitute some professionals in the nursing industry, but the aim of the IOM report is to ensure that nurses are fully represented in the provision of health services to patients. This report challenge professionals in the nursing industry to be responsible enough in order to provide appropriate services and leadership services to patients and healthcare industry at large. The IOM report emphasized on incorporation of leadership develop where necessary for nurses when in the process of preparing the right professionals of the nursing industry, (Reinhard & Hassmiller, 2011).Several numbers of recommendations were provided on the report on how to improve leadership of nurses in nursing healthcare professional. Some of the recommendations on development of patient care models give entrepreneurial opportunities, and implement and innovation through information technology.
