The Ethical Dilemma Case Study
An Ethical dilemma refers to an intricate situation that often involves an apparent psychological conflict between decent imperatives, in which to obey would upshot in contravening another. The term ethical dilemma has many definitions based on the field the term is applied. Garber R. Peter (2008) bases the term ethical dilemma in the field of business. He terms ethics as a more formalized set of standards established by a particular society. Other sources term it as an ethical paradox because in moral philosophy, paradox often plays a middle role in ethics discussion. An Ethical dilemma is a situation that one has experienced or will experience in future. It is imperative for every individual to learn how to maneuver such a situation.
My value in this particular case is to save the lives of the people left down stairs. At least saving one soul would not deny me freedom to live with myself. Regardless of the risk involved in going back to the thickening smoke down stairs, I value other people’s lives like I value mine. According to the ethical standards of my society, saving a life is more precious than losing all lives; hence I would risk saving a life. However, this ethical standard does not deny the fact that sometimes the situation might become practically impossible. In that case, it is better checking on another option which would be save your own self but not at the expense of others. The other alternative of solving this dilemma would be pursuing to save at least on life from the burning building. The other option would be to find out how to extinguish the fire; hence paving way for the rescue operation. Additionally, like peter said, “every man for himself and God for us all” would be the other alternative incase one’s conscious does not blame him or her.
