Ethics Case Study

Table of Contents

Regarding to the ethical standards of my society, saving just one life is more precious than losing all lives which I would opt to do. However, engaging in such a risky duty will have its own repercussions either positive or negative. For example, a negative consequence might occur in case the rescue fails and both the rescuer and the one being rescued perish in the building.  On the other hand, the mission might be successful; hence a positive result.  Another repercussion would be a negative reaction from the society because one chose to save himself and ignored another life. In most cases, if members of the society do not understand the reasons which lead to that alternative, the individual is considered as a disgrace to the society (Garber R. Peter 2008). When one opts to save at least one life, chances are, either both of them will make it, or they will all perish in the tragedy.

The option of first extinguishing the fire also has its consequences such as; lack of equipments to extinguish the fire, the fire extinguishers, could be far from place of tragedy and may be lack of enough extinguishers in case there is some. However, it this particular situation, finding proper equipments to putdown fire is practically impossible since the rescuer is on the roof top.   Opting Peter’s idea on every man for himself would lead to an inhuman characteristic. It is common knowledge, helping a suffering person is a humanistic character, but if one decides to ignore others, he will also suffer the same in the future. Furthermore, the individual might suffer guilt in case the pressure mounts on him due to his or her ignorant behavior. In of prioritizing this acceptable alternative, saving, a life would be the first followed by extinguishing fire and finally ignoring the rescue mission.  My plan of action begins with evaluating the best alternative in my view and implementing it in due time. Working out the situation before much time elapses, would be the commitment to engage first.
