Prejudice and Discrimination on Television Program

In completing the assignment, I chose an American TV drama program called The Sopranos. It was by David Chase and the story revolves around New Jersey mobster James Gandolfini and his life. James Gandolfini is   as Tony Soprano who faces different challenges in his life when trying to resolve conflicts of the criminal group he heads and his own family challenges. A number of characters were in development of the TV program, but the main characters include Tony Soprano, Carmela Soprano, Meadow Soprano, Dominic Chianese, Aida Turturro, and Johnny Boy Soprano, (Edison, 2007).

Tony was in 1959 by Johnny Boy Soprano and Livia. His father was a member of an illegal, criminal gambling group, and it was after Johnny’s death Tony had to take care of the family. In trying to help his family and serve as a leader in the criminal group, Tony faces a lot of challenges that affect his health conditions, (Martin, 2007).

The TV program is by most Italian Americans. In line with that, it is clear that the program does support characters in a stereotypical manner that reflects their race and ethnicity. Evidence suggests that the program unfairly stereotypes most of the characters in a gangster way. This tries to show how the program portrays Italian Americans as gangsters. In the current world, media tries to set the agenda on how people live.

The way media analyzes individual’s lives create the aspect of stereotyping. Evidence suggests that media has a significant impact on the idea of stereotyping and characterization. It has developed improper misconceptions towards an individual’s life and how they relate with each other in the society, (Edison, 2007).
