Authentic assessment will be the most suitable form of assessment for a science class. Authentic assessment requires students to perform tasks that require them to apply the skills acquired in class within a real world scenario (Ormrod, 2007). This assessment form is the most suitable because science is a practical subject, whose aim is to equip students with essential knowledge that would help them solve various real world issues. Providing students with authentic forms of assessment will enhance the outcome of the learning process.
The purpose of the instruction is to evaluate the students’ understanding of the concept learnt in class. Assigning practical task to students will enable the teacher to determine whether the student acquired the knowledge that was intended (Ormrod, 2007). The purpose of the assessment is also to evaluate the students’ ability to apply the concepts acquired in class in a real word scenario. The goal of authentic assignment is to create productive citizen who are able to apply the knowledge learnt in class in life scenario. In authentic assessment the teacher assigns tasks to students (Ormrod, 2007). The teacher is also required to develop standards for evaluating the student performance in the task. The standard should be objective and responsive to the students’ needs.
Results of authentic assessment will enable the teacher to understand the concepts that the students have not understood (Ormrod, 2007). Thus, the teacher will identify new teaching strategy that will enhance the understanding of students. The individual approach taken in this assessment also enables the teacher to identify strengths and weakness of individual students. This puts the teacher in a better position to assist the student. The results of authentic assessment also help the teacher to identify the ability of the student to connect between the theoretical knowledge and practical applications (Ormrod, 2007). The assessment meets RSVP criteria.
