AARP Presentation
Abstract
This presentation seeks to provide an exemplification of the role of nursing practitioners on the health of seniors. This includes the description of the implications of nursing practice on senior citizens such as members of AARP. With extensive influence in public policy formulation in the United States, AARP can play a critical role towards enhancing the role of nurses. All these perspectives form an integral part of this presentation.
Introduction
Elderly people require an excellent system of medical care in order to maximize their wellbeing. An effective system of medical care has the capacity to tremendously enhance life expectancy in the population. This is because the elderly can enjoy the twilight years of their lives without worrying about health challenges. AARP is an organization whose members are above the age of fifty. Although this age group is highly effective in terms of economic productivity, it is also prone to numerous health risks (Biley, 2006). For instance, individuals in this age group are highly prone to Parkinson’s disease. Additionally, this age group is prone to different kinds of heart complications. However, the establishment of an effective nursing framework would be helpful in streamlining the quality health care for AARP members.
The Role And Impact Of Nurse Specialists On The Health Of Seniors
Caring for the elderly would be extremely complex without the services and presence of nursing specialists. Nurses have the relevant competence of enhancing the wellbeing of elderly people through health care services. There are various outstanding roles of nursing specialists towards senior citizens. Consequently, it is essential to examine these roles in order to appreciate the impact of nursing specialists on the health condition of senior citizens such as members of AARP.
Monitoring the Health Condition of seniors
This serves as among the most outstanding roles on nursing specialists. In essence, this role not only applies to nursing care for the elderly but also other members of the society. For the senior citizens, it is fundamentally essential to monitor their health condition. In the event of any health complication, the nursing practitioner recommends the most effective treatment plan. For all health complications, early detection helps in avoiding a potential health crisis (Laitinen, 2008). It is extremely difficult to monitor the health condition of an individual if there lacks competent health care practitioners. This justifies the importance of effective nursing care for a high risk group such as members of AARP. Through active monitoring, nursing specialist enhance the health standards for seniors. Nurses have the relevant competence of identifying critical symptoms or behavior change among the elderly. Such competence is useful in promoting the wellbeing of AARP members. In instances where minor prescriptions are required, nursing specialists can offer medication without seeking the assistance of physicians (Teeri, 2006). From another perspective, it is essential to note that some health complications require active monitoring. For instance, patients suffering from hypertension require regular checkups for the pulse rate and systolic movements. With the assistance of nursing specialists, it becomes easy to keep track of these sensitive complications.
Development of Health Care Plans
Apart from monitoring the health condition of senior citizens, another essential role of nurses in caring for senior citizens is the development of health care plans. Health care plans are extremely useful in ensuring that the seniors receive the best services. These plans are also critical in developing health care frameworks for the immediate future and also from a long term perspective. The absence of nursing specialists would lead to the absence of effective health care plans (Verhallen, 2008). Such plans are extremely useful in maintaining the relevant standards of health care for senior citizens. Through the plans, nurses address the most pressing health concerns for the seniors. Since they are competent, nursing specialists can determine whether a health care plan would be effective or not. Such plans are also crucial in developing effective health care policies for the seniors. These policies are essential in addressing the specialized health concerns for seniors. Through the plans, it is evident that nurse specialists have positive implications on the health condition of seniors.
Counseling and Psychological Support for seniors
In addition to physical illnesses, seniors are prone to emotional distress and other psychological problems. The immediate family members of the seniors might not be available to offer the relevant emotional support for these individuals. However, nursing specialists help in filling these voids. Emotional wellbeing is an integral component of health. For instance emotional distress can cause an increase in the pulse rate of an individual suffering from hypertension (Verhallen, 2008). Nursing specialists have the relevant competence to counsel and offer psychological support to seniors. Consequently, members of AARP can benefit immensely from such nursing services. The absence of emotional distress forms the platform for individuals to maintain excellent health standards. Counseling is thus an essential aspect of consideration with regard to the role of nursing specialists in caring for the seniors.
Lobbying
As among the most prominent NGOs in the USA, AARP has the capacity to lobby for the establishment of policies that streamline the role of nurses. Nurses in the country have excellent competence in developing health care plans for target groups that are highly susceptible. However, the lack of adequate funding derails the capacity of nurses to pursue such kinds of policy changes. The input of leading lobby groups such as AARP would be invaluable towards allocating sufficient funds for nursing practitioners to implement such policies. AARP has the capacity to influence policymakers such as senators as well as government agencies. The enactment of such policies would represent a significant stride towards streamlining the quality of health care for among the high risk groups (Biley, 2006). Apart from senior citizens, other high risk groups include African Americans and persons with different kinds of disabilities.
