Ageism and Gender Inequality

Ageism is just an experience of getting older and not of getting aged and dependant. Although at old age most women are learned and liberated, it is common to find that at work, aged women are not allowed to perform some tasks as they are thought to be ineffective as compared to their male counterparts at the same age. In the society as well, aged women are faced with discrimination and are seen as dependants and not independent at all due to associated old age disorders.

Some people claim that at older age, it is wrong for the elderly to go back to school and refocus on their careers. In addition, any aged person enrolled for certain career faces hostility from the younger members of the class. But one thing is for real, even the aged need money to move on with their lives and if in the position to provide for them, it becomes easier to remain independent and make ends meet by themselves.

More often than not, the aged women face discrimination from the society and work place than aged men and to some extent are forced to take early retirements from jobs or even are denied jobs after their retirement age compared to the retired male counterparts. It is thought that women have more responsibilities to take care of at home other than working at old age.

This is a distorted notion that societies need to change by embracing the fact that even the older women and men in the society equally need some money to keep them moving on with their lives after ageism. It is also important to have their minds involved to avoid psychological disorders. From a street interview most people were for the opinion that ageism starts as early as 50 years for most women who by then have some associated health problems while in general, most people thought ageism starts at 80.
