The story tries to reveal what it means to have an attachment and love two cultures, two countries, two places and also two landscapes. The author explores the double cultural identity of   an immigrant subject who is the grandfather who after traveling to the United States, is captivated by the beauty of California but at the same misses and loves his home country of Japan.

The main theme passed by the author is that it is normal and alright to love two cultures equally. Other themes include family ties and history, cross cultural experiences and the theme on the discovery of new things through characterization and imagery.

Say uses imagery to indicate the discovery of new things as one of the theme in the book. Says writes that, “grandfather was amazed by the deserts with rocks like enormous sculptures” p 8. The author further says that they were amazed by the enormous trees they saw in Settle Washington when they first came to America.

The story does not reflect of a sharp contrast that exists between two different races. Instead, the author displays the case of an old man who values and appreciates the   two races equally.
