Antipsychotics Drugs

Antipsychotics drugs are the most selling drugs in United States. For instance, Abilify and Seroquel are the most powerful antipsychotic drugs.  The number of patients using the antipsychotic drugs has increased. A total of 3.1 million citizens used antipsychotic drugs in 2011.  Psychiatrists have used the drugs to treat disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and serious depression.  The second generation antipsychotic drugs have adverse side effects. The drugs increase the level of sugar in the blood. They also increase lipid, cholesterol in the body leading to weight gain. Moreover, the drugs can cause irreversible movement disorders.  The drugs have been used to treat mild disorders like mood disorders and emotional discomfort. Hence, people should be careful when using antipsychotic drugs because of the side effects.  This has implication on nurses as they will use alternative drugs that do not have serious side effects to treat psychiatric disorders.

The nurses will not use second line generation antipsychotic drugs to treat mental disorders because of the side effects. Hence, they should be careful when providing care to patients with mental disorders to ensure they get appropriate medication.  I believe the antipsychotic drugs should be used to treat serious mental disorders including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and severe depression. However, they should not be used to treat mental disorders that are not severe because of the side effects. Patients and heath care providers should think twice before using the drugs. Thus, the article is fair as it allows physicians and other health care providers to use antipsychotic drugs when treating serious mental disorders. It also prohibits the use of the drugs when treating mental disorders that can be treated with other drugs.  Therefore, the article prevents misuses of antipsychotic drugs (Friedman, 2012).
