I am applying for a scholarship that would enable me to pursue college education. I come from an economically disadvantaged family background. I grew up in conditions of sustained financial difficult after my father died during my tender years. My siblings and I had to depend on my mother, who did not have a stable job. Lack of adequate finances made the task of achieving my education goals extremely challenging. However, I remained determined to pursue my goals and my determination has brought me this far. I have always strived to achieve academic excellence. I am the first person in my family to attain college level education and all my siblings look up to me for guidance. Apart from providing inspiration to my younger brothers, I am often called upon to provide financial assistance to them. I have to supplement my mother’s effort since she cannot manage to meet the costs on her own. The responsibility of taking care of my family has made it extremely challenging for me to finance my college education.
I am senior students majoring in information system management. This discipline integrates computer and business. I have always had an interest in computers and business and, therefore, this discipline accords me the opportunity to pursue these interests. My wish is to become a system analyst and work in stable organization. I believe that this profession will expand my knowledge and fulfill my desire to assist my family and community. I also believe that this professional will also expose me to the world of business bringing closer to my dream of becoming a successful entrepreneur. I also hope that by making succeeding in achieving my career goals, I will be able to server as inspiration to my sibling. I hope that, through this, I would be able to encourage that they can also make it despite the challenges.
Presently, I am a truck driver. Though this job is not directly connected to my career goal of becoming a system analyst, the job has been instrumental in the pursuit of this goal. Through this job, I have been able to finance my education this far. The job has also enabled me to support my family and, thus, giving me an opportunity to think about pursing college education. The job will continue to be instrumental to the realization of my goals. This job will continue to support me through college by providing me with upkeep money.
I have actively engaged in extracurricular activities including being sports both at college and in high school. I participate in various sporting activities including basketball and tennis. I have engaged in various volunteer activities within my community. This including tutoring students with difficulties in various subjects within my community. I am also Christian faithful and an active participant in the activities of my church. For a long period, I have served as a Sunday school teacher, helping to instill positive morals to young children. I was also forced to assume greater responsibilities within the family after the death of my father. Since my mother was always working, I had to provide leadership and directions to the young ones. Though this posed a lot of challenges during my development, it inculcated a sense of responsibility in me.
