 Proposed Organization: Wal-Mart Stores, Inc

Wal-Mart is American owned retail chain that operates on a global scale. The chain runs over 10,000 stores in 27 different countries around the globe (Wal-Mart, 2012). Majority of Wal-Mart stores are found in the United States, but the company also controls a large share of the international retail market. Wal-Mart’s operation in the United States has been significantly successful with the company exhibited tremendous growth, and recording fair returns over the past three decades.


On the other hand, the company’s international operation has recorded mixed performance, with stores in countries such as UK and China exhibiting excellent performance while the stores in Germany and South Korea exhibiting poor performance (Wal-Mart, 2012. In 2012, the company became the second largest public corporation, in terms of revenues, after earning over $ 400 billion in revenues (Wal-Mart, 2012). The mission of the organization is to improve people’s lives by provided them with affordable goods and services. The retail industry, in which Wal-Mart operates, is very competitive. Wal-Mart’s faces stiff competitions from other international retailers such as; Target, Costco, K-Mart and Tesco, as well as small local retailers.


Type of Organization: Public Traded Company

Wal-Mart is a public traded company. Public Traded companies are companies that have offered its shares to the general public through the stock exchange (Moye, 2010). Shares of these companies are freely transferred in the market allowing the value of the company to be determined by the market. Since the shareholders are the legal owners of these companies, public limited companies must remain accountable to shareholders by publishing financial outcomes of the company (Moye, 2010). These companies must also involve their shareholders while making major decisions for the company by requesting them to vote. Shareholders receive returns from investing in these companies by receiving dividends. Wal-Mart became a public traded company in 1972 when its shares were listed in the New York Stock Exchange (Wal-Mart, 2012). Though the company has sold its shares to the public, a large portion (48%) of the company shares are owned by the Walton family.


Stock Symbol: WMT

Wal-Mart securities are traded in the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol WMT. The company’s stock is included in the S& P 500 components as well as the Dow Jones Industrial Average Component. Wal-Mart stocks have exhibited stable performance over the last decade despite the prevailing economic environment (Wal-Mart, 2012).

Total Number of Employees: 2.2 million

Wal-Mart is among the largest employers in the world with over 2.2 million people working in stores located in different parts of the world (Wal-Mart, 2012). The company has hard various human resource and labor relation issues in the past including low wages, discrimination of employees and poor working environment.
