Becoming a Christian

I had never thought of becoming a Christian for a long time in my life. Being from a well-up family, I thought that everything about my life was clear and that this was enough to give meaning and value to my life. Life at home and at school has for many years kept me busy and occupied that there has been no emptiness requiring the presence of any religion to fill it up. My parents were kindhearted and brought me up with the best of morals and values our culture required (surfacetosoul, 2012).

After listening to some of my Christian friends, Jesus also had moral teachings that He used to teach people so that they could live under the guidance of good morals and values. What then is the difference between what my parents taught me and what Jesus taught his people? What makes His teachings worth acceptance and practice by Christians that my parents are unable to provide to me? I have also seen some of these Christian friends living horrible lives that my parents have always regarded as wrong and gave me sufficient reason to believe in not engaging in them.

What troubles me is whether the fact that Christians believe in the forgiveness of sins guarantees them that with or without observing good morals they will still have their sins forgiven? If this is the case then, why should anyone become a Christian only to follow what their fresh leads them to which is sin? Again, who stands forgiveness for their sins, those like me who are not yet Christians but practically live within the morals and values defined by my parents or the Christians who just believe in the forgiveness of sins? This indicates the presence of different versions of Christianity that lead some people to believe in one part of it and others the other and so on. At this point then I am lost on who I should seek the truth about Christianity from or belief in what my friends’ Christianity version and leave the rest.
