BHE 411 Module 1

You are working at a local health and fitness center when you meet Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith is a 27 year old man who is approximately 40 pounds overweight. As you are taking his background information, he denies any past medical history of heart, kidney or lung disease, but does admit to being a smoker (almost 1 pack per day). Mr. Smith indicates that his fitness goals include weight loss.
After being assessed by both you and the Registered Dietitian, a plan is devised to help Mr. Smith lose approximately 2 pounds per week. This will be accomplished through a sensible calorie restricted diet and exercise program. When the plan is presented to Mr. Smith, he is not satisfied with your plan and wants to lose weight much faster. He tells you about a “nutritionist” who his friend went to see a few months back. The nutritionist helped his friend lose over 30 pounds in the first month. He reported that the nutritionist recommended a low carbohydrate, high protein/high fat diet, and is now asking that you do the same for him.
In a two to three page paper, address the following areas:
– Discuss the differences between the nutritionist’s advice and the advice that is being given by you and the Registered Dietitian (worth 25 percent of your papers grade).
-Explain the role of each of the macronutrients and their functions to Mr. Smith (worth 25 percent of your papers grade).
-Explore the “pros” and “cons” of the diet Mr. Smith is asking you to recommend (worth 25 percent of your papers grade).
-Consider some of the health risks and side effects that a low carbohydrate, high fat/high protein diet can have on body systems (worth 25 percent of your papers grade).
