In the current world, interpersonal communication and understanding human behaviors are two vital aspects that should help individuals create a healthy environment. This essay will focus on bipolar disorder and how it may respond in the field of victimization. The essay will also highlight on specific communication skills that officers should have when dealing with an individual suffering from bipolar disorder.


Discussion

Manic depression is another name for Bipolar disorder and affects the person by changing his or her day’s moods. It is a medical condition that affected 2.3 million people in America alone. The disease is to have existed as long as 200 A.D. It was conceptualized in early 19th century by Emil Kraeplin and gave it the name manic depressive insanity. Bipolar disorder commonly affects individuals in the adolescent stage and young adults. This is the time when an individual encounters initial depression situations. Depression is the main cause of bipolar disorder and may affect an individual to a point of committing suicide, (Compton & Kotwicki, 2007).Apart from depression, study shows that genetic conditions contribute to development of bipolar disorder. Lifestyle and environmental setup of an individual are to play a part in development of the above condition. In general, this condition has no single specified because thus it may be caused by different situations.


Evidence shows that individuals suffering from a given disorder are at high chances of being victimized as compared to individuals in the general population. Bipolar disorder is among the conditions that are favorable for victimization a situation that affects individuals at a high level. This is   to individuals who have had severe symptoms and are taking medication. The conditions affect their thinking capacity developing depression. It is through depression that they develop making them engage in criminal activities such as rape, robbery, and theft. Such behaviors only affect individuals who are   by the condition, and they may do that without their knowledge, (Compton & Kotwicki, 2007).


Different studies show that individuals suffering from bipolar disorder may not know their conditions. It is therefore, necessary for police officers dealing with such people have certain verbal and non verbal communication indicators. This helps police officers understand and learn ways to handle bipolar disorder individuals simply because they might handle them in the wrong direction. Some of the common communication indicators they should have include haptic communication (gesture and touch), eye contact, facial expression, body language, and symbols among others. Evidence shows that when the police officer uses the above communication indicators, they manage to handle individuals suffering from the above medical condition, (Compton & Kotwicki, 2007).


Communication is a vital component in any setting. Creating an environment that develops understanding starts with effective communication. Communication can be a challenge to a police officer who wants to deal with an individual suffering from bipolar disorder. The police officer should be able to acknowledge differences, be assertive, assess without judgmental, prepare to listen, and give room for feedback. The officer must also learn how to share feelings, be an open minded person, and have the ability to convey private information as it occurs. In conclusion, bipolar disorder is a medical condition caused by depression. Evidence shows that individuals suffering from this condition are highly involved in criminal activities. Police officers should learn how to communicate with such individuals, (Compton & Kotwicki, 2007).
