Co-Ed Education System Is Better That Single-Sex School

Table of Contents

Many educators today claim that the single-sex schools are not as beneficial as the Co-Ed schools. However, though, both the Co-Ed schools and the single sex schools have their own merits and limitations. Based on the exiting evidence though, being part of a co-education school presents a lot of social benefits to students as compared to those in single-sex schools. The main role associated with co-education schools is that they ensure that both boys and girls exist in a social harmony in various ways. The co- education schools first help students to learn and develop various key skills of life.  The single sex education school according to some educators is beneficial for they provide students with some self confidence. However, this is not the true picture and meaning of a student having confidence.

Confidence is an  attribute that  makes  one  brave and  bold enough in standing  in front of  any  individual and  to urge his or her personal points. I strongly feel that the best place to groom a student’s confidence is in a co-ed school with a mixture of both boys and girls. Usually when student are at their adolescent stages, they tend to be shy not knowing of themselves. They are self conscious about their physical appearance. Some may decide to live a low profile life because they do not have confidence in themselves. The confidence developed in single sex schools is wrongly time and is   because after completing school, students will proceed to the real world comprising o male and female. They can experience this in the workplaces or higher learning institutions like universities and colleges.

This means that the setting in a co- education school is that which represents the actual reality of the society. Therefore, in such schools, students stand a better chance of in learning how to deal with social challenges, such as, gender stereotypes, and cross-gender intimidation after completing school.  The confidence developed in the co- education system is, therefore, the one that   students will need in their future lives.  For students in single-sex schools, they will not be well equipped on how to deal with the opposite sex or how to behave in their presence. They will also face a challenge on how to relate with them in the workplace, form friendship with them and dating them in the right way.Single-sex schools hinder the student’s diversity.  Unlike the common claim made by educators that the single-sex schools education helps students to avoid unwanted interruptions, they miss the key point of considering the issues of child development diversification.  When children are born, their brains are empty, or scientifically known as tabular rasa.

At the schooling level, these students have the opportunity of learning life skills and gaining knowledge.  Why should we use school policies that deny students of their whole rounded growth, and development? At the age of schooling, the young children and adolescents are at their better level of learning and biologically developing.  This stage is crucial in shaping and guiding children as they develop instead of unnecessarily segregating them.Another critical   issue that co- education schools support is the fight against gender discrimination. Segregation plays a significant role in gender stereotypes development, and it further sends students the message that a given gender group is inferior compared to the other.  First, is the way the academic syllabus is  structured, whereby,  one will find that the girls  schools are   art  subjects such as  home science, music,  history,  tailoring, interior  design,  housekeeping and management among  others.

The boy’s schools, on the other hand, are scientific and technological subjects, such as, engineering, medicine, and architecture. This clearly shows that   the schools systems have not fought the issue of gender discrimination in the society.  Some parents and educators claim that single sex schools help to separate girls and boys because of their biological differences.  Therefore, helping in the protection of girls from feeling inferior due to the stiff competition they get from the boys in various academic fields.  Already, this is an illogical argument because the persons saying so have already dismissed the idea that girls can perform equal to or even better than boys in scientific and technological fields.  Girls should be given an opportunity to prove their activities in areas which were thought that they were only for men and boys.

Therefore, the allowing of girls and boys to work and study in the same school with the same syllabus, they will learn from each other to promote harmony. This harmony will be to the society, and it is only possible when single-sex schools.  Also, in a co- education school, students learn to rely on one another despite their gender differences.  These schools give students learn from each other especially in activities, which have for the past generations been designated to be for a single gender group. The psychological Bulletin (2010) showed that, in mathematics, the girls performed in the same way as the boys. This study aimed at testing gender effect on the academic performance of students. The co- education schools further provide students with an opportunity to interact as male and female leading to far much better outcomes.  There is no empirical study that has proven that single-schools perfume better than the co- education schools.

Educators have blindly changed co- education schools to single sex – school without considering the available evidence that indicate that the single-sex schools perform better.  They will insist that being a girl’s or boy’s school will help students concentrate in their studies.  This is a baseless argument because the student’s performance is based on their hard work and the available of all the needed support and resources to make students pass their examinations.  Helpers Diane PHD, a professor of psychology from the college of Claremont McKenna says that, one cannot.  They are single-sex when there are changing lots of other things at the same time.” (Halpern,) Human beings have been proven to attain their desired goals through persistence and when knowing that the opposite sex is watching them.  This means that students will make an effort of improving their score so that they can impress someone from the opposite sex.

At the end,  students will end up attaining better results within the co- education school system as compared to a single –sex schools with students who  do not mind on  who  is watching them.Behavior and moral discipline can easily be learned by students in a co- education school.  These behaviors include personal hygiene and self grooming, maintaining discipline and avoiding being on the wrong records. Such characteristics will helps students learn better that when they attend single-sex schools.  Study indicates that girls help the boys from involving in unruly behaviors; leading to minimal expulsions, suspensions, and poor academic performance.  Studies have shown that separating children based on their gender leads to a significant social gap. This means that, students attending co-ed schools have a much higher chance of   developing whole rounded social skills (Gaztambide-Fenand).

This is because students in a single gender schools are   to their peers of the sane gender, which is not the true representation of the world.   Being part of the co- education systems enable students to be divers as they experience a whole variety of cultures, sexes and colors. This has made students from single sex education systems to face a hard time as they join their careers because their minds were only focused on education.  Therefore,  schools  should only  not aim at  teaching  issues of  academic  knowledge and skills alone, but,  should be  a place to nature  students growth in all angles. In conclusion, a society cannot be only for one sex and success in academic excellence can only be achieved when it is a linked to social responsiveness and responsibility to a certain degree. Therefore, for the good of the American society, there is the need to establish appropriate social foundation for the coming generation through nurturing them in a whole and real social setting.
