Cultural Diversity in the Workplace

Cultural Diversity in the Workplace

A dictionary definition of diversity refers to a situation that involves different elements. When discussing people, diversity refers to different categories of people within a social organization. A personal definition of diversity is the multicultural differences of different individual in the society (Andersen, & Taylor, 2007). Movement and relocations from one point to another has seen people from different cultural backgrounds converge in different areas across the world.  The coming together of people from different cultures is what I refer as diversity.

I am female born and raised in Columbia till I turned 21 when we relocated to the US.   America introduced me to the aspect of cultural diversity as I experienced other cultures. In Columbia, relations are based on the formation of relationship and lifelong connection (Andersen, & Taylor, 2007). When I arrived in America, I realized that American work differently. Americans have a focus where the last emphasis is on the formation of relation.  In the US, I also got exposed to other religions. Being a staunch catholic, I was taken aback by the numerous religions in US. Religions such as scientology were particularly difficult to comprehend. I had been raised on the notion that one is either a catholic or a protestant. New and emerging religions were new to me.

I also experienced differences in communication. As a Columbian, born and raised, I was accustomed to holding conversations with virtually everyone I met on the streets. This was not the case. In US, such gestures are considered rude and intrusive. It is impossible to engage with others about any topic unless we are familiar with each other. My main task was to make close friends who we would share experiences with.

In US, I also realized that men and women work equally hard to earn a living. Just like the men, women could also excel in terms of career development. This has given me hope as a Columbian female immigrant. I have an opportunity as a woman to work hard and become financially independent.
