Decision Making and Ethics

According to Clegg, Kornberger and Rhodes (2007) rational decision making models and expectations are flawed and prevent the practice of ethics. This perception is true as rationality pertains the determination of the appropriate means that one can use to advance one’s goals. Individuals and organizations know what is best for them, and they strive to attain that good. In an effort to attain the ultimate good, an individual may engage in unethical practices (Lincoln, 2011). Ethical practice in decision making allows for the use of emotions, where the individual weighs the pros and cons and the consequences of his actions. Rational decision making leads to people simply following order rather than looking at the moral responsibility of the decision and the action resulting to the decision.

Practicing leadership within an ethical decision making context mean that the leader has to integrate ethics in his decision making process. Ethical decision making involves analysis of various complex business decisions before implementation. It also means that the leader will review all possible views that  other parties and stakeholders may present. In the end, an ethical decision making leader makes decisions that appeals to the majority of the parties involved. An ethical decision making context also provides vocabulary that a leader can utilize to demonstrate an ethical position (Lincoln, 2011). The ability to demonstrate an ethical position is particularly vital in situations where a leader is under pressure to compromise his decision.  The leader must also have moral imagination, which means that every decision will have an ethical dimension. The leaders should also emphasize on moral identification and ordering which involves determination of issues of high priority and dealing with them first.
