Design Type
Introduction
The various qualitative research design types help the researcher in the study of the human habits as well as behaviors. In this text, I will look at the type of qualitative design used in the qualitative article “Day surgery: patients of a nurse-lead preadmission clinic.”
The type of qualitative design
The design type used in the qualitative article named in the introductory section above is the survey research design. Burns et al. (2008) notes that the survey research design seeks to come up with a measurement of variables by questioning the various participants in the study. This is then followed by an analysis of the variables relationships. The article named above uses the survey research design as it questions the patients in an effort elicit or bring out the perceptions of the patients with regard to the pre-assessment grooming they get just before the day surgery. It is important to note that this study utilizes the cross-sectional design as it questions patients at a single point in time. Jackson (2007) notes that this kind of survey may be largely inappropriate due to its inability to deduce the casual relationships direction. It would have been prudent or more appropriate therefore if a longitudinal design was utilized in the article under consideration. This is because as McNeill (2005) argues, similar questions are asked at several points in time.
Conclusion
It is important to note that though survey research designs are not resource extensive, their use is not highly recommended due to their various weaknesses including but not limited to errors in measurement.
