Development Of Sculpture From Rodin To Brancusi.
Introduction
Sculptures have been exiting, fascinating and evoking admiration for quite a long period of time. In this text, I look at the development of sculpture from Rodin to Brancusi. I also compare as well as contrast the works of these two master artists.
The development of sculpture
Rodin and Brancusi are considered among some of the best modern sculptors. One of Rodin’s options to modern sculpture is the ‘the man with a broken nose’. However the sculpture that really gained popularity was his piece ‘age of bronze’. This was followed by other notables such as ‘gates of hell’ and ‘the tinker’. Most of the works in this period were influenced in a way by Michelangelo but ‘the kiss is by far the most famous of Rodin’s work. This became one of the works he was mostly associated with and it was later followed by Brancusi’s ‘with a kiss’. (Lewis et al. 2008). According to Wintle (2002), Rodin and Brancusi are credited with making the sculpture popular. They placed the sculpture at the same level with paintings. As accomplished sculptors, they both used wood, stone, bronze etc in their works. Brancusi studied under Rodin. The main difference between these two sculptors was in their style. While Rodin concentrated on the realistic sculpture style, Brancusi chose to use stone and wood in his work. Rodin was also not keen on following the technique which was then largely used by most craftsmen. He laid ground for modern sculpture by departing from the earlier techniques.
Conclusion
It is important to note that both the art works of Rodin and Brancusi continue to be admired today and it can be reliably be said that they laid foundation for modern sculpture.
