Documentary: Freedom Riders
The documentary ‘Freedom riders’ was produced by John William. It is a documentary that focuses on how activists opposed segregation of the south. The documentary was created with the aim of inspiring a new generation of youths. It si a documentary that vividly takes us through the struggles that a group of students underwent in their fight against racial segregations
The scenes that I felt clearly conveyed the message was the scene where the students from both the black and the white race boarded buses together and traveled to the segregated South. This scene portrays the message of unity and equality across races. Students that had been coached to have non-violent protest by veteran activists like Rev. James Lawson board the same bus though they were of different races. This effort, though risky was aimed at passing a message to the rigidly segregated south. It is also an important lesson that even ordinary citizens can bring about change in their community if they are determined.
Another scene in the documentary that interests me is when the filmmaker Stanley nelson in the Interview says that the documentary will be an indication that you don’t have to be Martin Luther to bring about change. Nelson clearly states that “Freedom Riders indicate that you don’t have to be”. It is an important lesson to all. To bring about change you do not have to be a distinguished personality like Martin Luther was. It gives the viewers the notion that anyone with a vision and a mission can bring about ch The third scene is when the white Southerners set the bus the mixed students were traveling in on fire when the students were still inside. This is a moving seen as we see the white Southerners holding the door closed as the fire burns so as to kill all the activists. This scene is important as it shows the intensity of racial segregation than the Southerners held.
Generally the documentary is appropriate as it shows the various ways the Americans and the rest of the world had held views of the US. It shows how the South has implemented the racist laws of segregation and how the blacks were viewed as less equal to the white man. It took the students efforts to board the bus and head to the South and though they suffered, they were successful in bringing change to the racially segregated South community.
