Technological development has led to development of various technologies used in supply chain management. Organizations have adopted technologies like Radio frequency identification.
2. Benefits of RFID technologies in supply chain management
a. Distinct identification of goods.
b. RFID improves tracing of products and visibility throughout the whole supply chain and hence helps organizations overcome inventory inaccuracy issues.
b. It also speeds up various supply chain processes including shipping, tracking, check out and counting. This in turn improves inventory flow and provides accurate information.
c. RFID technologies help prevent bullwhip effect by easing communication and providing real time information . Bullwhip effect is caused by selling seasonal products and batching orders by participants. Also, it is caused by lack of information sharing, communication and collaboration. It can be reduced through sharing of information.
d. RFID improves the performance of supply chain by increasing inventory availability, enhancing coordination, reducing labor cost and inventory levels.
3. ROI analysis of implementation of RFID in supply chain management.
Organizations should determine whether to invest in RFID as it is expensive. Organizations should understand the RFID technology, its uses in their organization and then decide to implement it.
