Energy Story: Biomass
Summary of the article
Chapter 10 of the article is about biomass energy. A definition on biomass is provided in that most people think biomass to be garbage. The trash has forms of biomass that are renewable. Biomass recycling is for fuel and other uses leading to reduced need for land space to hold garbage. The biomass is used to produce compost material, heat, fuels and electricity. Compositing material from decayed food products and decayed plants helps in booting the growth of plants. The article presents an example of California which produces approximately 60 million tons of dried biomass per year.
This biomass from wood waste, waste from lumber mills a, agricultural and forest residue and feed stocks is burned to produce electricity of 2,000 megawatts to cater for the growing needs of the growing economy and population. A clear process of making biomass from waste materials is presented in this article. This is through the use of animal feeds, tree branches and waste wood among other craps that are placed together in a biomass power plant.
Further the benefits of biomass are provided in that it helps in reducing global warming unlike fossil fuel. . Replanting and the use of biomass help in carbon cycle. This takes place when plants store and use CO2 as they grow. Co2 that is stored in plants and later released when the plant decays and burned (energy story, 2012).
Importance of Biomass energy
The current rise of population will mean an increase in energy consumption as the economic output and income levels expand. The use of reliable, diverse, affordable, environmentally acceptable safe and renewable energy source presents a good opportunity to America in the future. This calls for the need to establish new industries and plants for renewable in resources and also in the development of pilot and small scale projects that will be use by small companies and institutions.
The capitalization of energy renewable resources would contribute to the achievement of various strategic objectives concerning increased security in the supply of energy through the energy resources diversification and minimizing imports this will lead to sustainable development of environmental protection and the development of the energy sector.
