FDA Withdraws Meridia from Market

Table of Contents

Meridia is a drug that was commonly used by obese individual for weight management. Obese individual widely used the drug because of its efficiency in weight loss. Unfortunately, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) finally agreed to withdraw the drug from the market due to its severe side effects.  According to FDA, Meridia increases the risk of heart attacks and stroke amongst the drug users. However, it can be argues that all drugs have various side effects (Pollack, 2010). The article thus points out that the withdrawal of the drug from the market is mandatory because the risks outweigh the benefits.

Nurses who have been admitting Meridia to their patients can now seek alternative medication for their patients. The article clearly shows the clinical trials that FDA conducted and verified the high risk of the drug over its benefits. Nurses can also use the information in the article to advice patients using the drug to seek alternative measures. If a patient is adamant to use the Meridia, the nurse can refer to the article to inform the patient on the risks involved.

The article is quite objective. It mentions the advantages of the drug i.e. it led to significant weight loss in patients. It also pinpoints the high risks of continuous use of the drug and advice its users to stop suing the drug and seek alternative medication (Pollack, 2010).  The article is also fairly written. The writer does not make an assumption but provides evidence of the withdrawal. First the article provides information on the test trials that show the significant health risk of the use of the drug. Secondly, the article also provides readers with statements from the director of the office of new drugs at FDA, Dr. Jenkins. A statement from the director of health research at public citizen, Dr. Wolfe, also proves the legitimacy of the content of this article.
