First Day of Nursing School
First Day of Nursing School
It started the day before I joined the nursing school. I was unease and could not sleep as usually due to lots of minor preparation that I thought were necessary. I woke up at 4:30 am because I had several things that I had to fix before leaving the house. Shower was the first thing I took and ironed the uniform because I thought descent was a requirement in nursing school. Before leaving the house, I feed the dogs something that was a routine before going anywhere. I left for school at around quarter to six because I was afraid not to get in traffic and late for school. I was lucky no traffic caught me, and by 7:15 am I was in the school compound and only few people had arrived. The place had a lot of confusion and disarrangements that prevented classes to start at their normal time. At the first day in nursing school, classes started at 9 am unlike other days when classes starts at 8 am. People had lost their way to classrooms and took them time before getting the right classrooms. Teachers on the other hand, moved from one side to another with stuff loaded in their hands. After an hour of confused environment, things started changing and finally the entire place was in order. Everyone was settling waiting for the lectures to start. The funniest things happened is that the teacher had entered the class and was among us. We were waiting for the teacher to come from outside but funny enough she stood from one of the end moving to the front and introducing her as our pharmacology teacher.
The class started few minutes after nine, and she asked us to write paragraphs on three topics. The paragraphs covered; why nursing, 4 year goal, and semester goal. This session was attractive because after completing those paragraphs, she called us one by one and requested us to read what we had written about the topics. It was amusing to hear views of different people and the goals they had in that duration of learning. Most people focused on CRNA and the teacher motivated us by saying it was an easy task provided seriousness. She gave us the syllabus where 50% included test, presentation 10%, 10% group work, post test 5%, and the final tests 25%. My impression towards nursing school was not bad, and everything seemed ok.It was until the lecture fully started that I realized things were complicated. The first nursing lecture took 5 hours with a short break of 15 minutes. By the end of the lecture, we had covered the firsts and second chapters. Why would they have decided to give us all that information in the first day? It was an orientation and mind preparation that we had to sacrifice a lot if we wanted to pass in nursing program. At the end, of the lecture everyone in the class had contributed something either by asking a question or answering. She gave us the entire course outline and the mode of tests. The first day ended it was funny although the homework given was confusing but finally managed to complete.
