FIRST TIME DRIVING EXPERIENCE

Driving a car for the first time

Driving for the first time in my life is one event worth recalling as it comes with a hard to forget memory of how I got my driving license. I was 12 years old and my dad, the only dad I knew who didn’t drive, bought my mum a car as a birthday present and an appreciation for their 13th anniversary since marriage. I didn’t know why my dad didn’t drive and didn’t bother to ask the reason as to why he didn’t. The only thing I remember was that mum used to take control of the wheels as we went for holidays.

On this very day, to be precise on a Saturday with no school to attend, my father called me to himself and gave me the keys to my mum’s new car. I was astonished as I could not understand why such was happening. The next thing dad did was to tell me to take control of the wheels and have my first driving lesson. I was hesitant as I felt that I was too young to have my driving lessons with the kind of busy road in my home area.

My mind was full of questions and my dad almost discovered this and before opening the car’s left front door, he told me this was very important in my life and I had better gotten out of the fear he saw expressed in my hesitation to take the keys and open the door. I gained some courage and opened the door like a man and took control of the wheels. This time round my father instructed me to take a road that was less busy and this gave me another reason to take another sigh of relief. In the car, my father was my instructor giving me all the instructions necessary to keep me on the road. My father succeeded to have me remain on the road and with at least manageable speed that was while causing little inconvenience to many drivers.

What I realized was that my father enjoyed giving instructions and for sometime I enjoyed listening to him and doing as he said. Curiosity and eagerness contributed much as I learnt very fast and started enjoying the whole scenario. One thing still remained unanswered in my mind. Why didn’t my father take me to a driving school for children why I would have proper training on the basics of driving with enjoyable children experiences? After sometime, we got tired and we decided to have lunch at some restaurant just near the company where I thought was my dad’s working place.

To my surprise, my father’s career was that of an instructor with a well-known driving school near home. As I came to learn from a close friend of his, he had hit a tree one day from work and had glass pierce his left eye making his vision partially impaired. He had since then had driving phobia and dedicated his life to training young children on the basics of driving and how careful they should be when drinking and driving because that almost cost his sight and life. The real story was that, my father and mother were in bad terms that morning as he went to work and my father had over drunk to overcome his tempers. Since then, mum took it as her obligation to drive the car anytime need arose and my father took the responsibility of a driving instructor for children and adults who needed driving lessons.
