Gender And Cultural Biases

Table of Contents

In his scenario, it is important to understand the human psychology that the characters have. This is a case where two different cultures are involved and how individuals respond to those cultures. Cultural and gender biasness is evident throughout the scenario.  We see cultural conditioning in judging and attempting to condition the other culture. Mr. and Mrs. Kapoor are east Indians while Deborah comes from another culture.  The Indian parents feel like when Cheya, their daughter plays with Anthony it will be going against the cultural expectation.  Similarly, their daughter playing football with Anthony and other boys is against the gender roles set by the cultural values. These are the gender and cultural biasness that exist in this scenario.

From these biases, we can conclude that what is right in one culture may not be right in another culture. In our day to day living we encounter such practices and we have to respect them.  People within those cultures should follow the societal expectations or else will be viewed as rebellious. The culture restricts the actions and activities of individuals through cultural conditioning (Mitterer and Coon, 2008, pp 1-11).

Mrs. Kapoor would reaction to this statement

Mrs. Kapoor reaction towards the gender statement is that she will most likely ignore it because she has been socialized and conditioned to follow the cultural values from her culture.  The parents to Chaya will also want their daughter to inherit those values set in the culture. Though they live in America, they want their daughter to be brought up in the cultural environment similar to theirs. This means that she has inherited and internalized the cultural norms from the East Indian society where she comes from and she thinks that if her daughter will follow the same footsteps, she will have a bright future.

Effect to the daughter

Chaya’s effect to this restriction will be of emotional and psychological confusion.  At firsts she will wonder why she is being restricted to play with Anthony and she will come to realize that cultural biasness is the cause of their friendship breakup.
