The awareness occasion will be on breast cancer. The health disparity addressed in this event was cancer among African American women. The choice for this topic was driven by statistics that indicate the combined death rate for all cancers is 25% higher than that of Whites. In addition, African Americans have the highest rate of deaths from cancer and shortest survival amongst all races and ethnic groups (American Cancer Society, 2012).

This community consists of African Americans, and this event is an essential way to mark October which is a breast cancer awareness month (AAHP, 2012). Among African American women, breast cancer is the most diagnosed. The incidents of breast cancer among African American women increased during the 1980s owing to increased detection.

The breast cancer event will involve topic such as the need for regular breast cancer screening and education on healthy lifestyles (American Cancer Society, 2012). The community will also be informed on the necessity for breast cancer test and the need for early detection in facilitating cancer treatment. Among African American, lifestyle is characterized by poor diet and lack of physical activity. Poor lifestyles increase colorectal cancer risk. Early cancer detection reduces the number of cancer related deaths.

To improve the health of African American women, I would assist them in the development of healthy calories consumption plans (American Cancer Society, 2012). This would go a long way in guiding African American women and their families on the consumption of the right levels of calories thus preventing colorectal cancer. In addition, I would educate women to engage in self-cancer evaluation tests and maintain regular checkups to facilitate early cancer detection and treatment. In order to make the event a success, I would seek the support of renowned women public speakers suffering from breast cancer. I would also seek cancer organizations to offer free checkups during the event and motivate women to carry on with the routine.
