Health Information Director
Health Information Director
The functions of a health information director have expanded for the last three years. This is because of technological advances. Most hospitals have adopted current technology to improve services offered to patients. For example, hospitals have started storing records electronically. Before, health information director work using technology as hospitals had not integrated technology in their organization. A health information director was required to plan and manage medical records manually (The health industry, 2010).
The functions of a health information director in the modern society are different from the functions of a health information director three years ago. First, a health information director plans and coordinates activities in the organization. Also, he develops and manages health information systems in the organization. In addition, the health information director establishes policies and procedures used when documenting, storing and retrieving information in health facilities. The health information director develops procedures and policies that are used to produce medical legal documents (Health care careers directory, 2009).
Apart from developing policies, a health information director also supervises staff. He helps the staff prepare and analyze medical records. He develops computer software for health facilities. The software is used in health information systems to store, retrieve and update data. Three years ago, health information director was not involved in developing software for the hospital or managing data electronically. The roles have changed because of technology. Technology has changed management in health institutions. This has led to health directors having more responsibilities than before. The roles of a health information director will expand in future as health institutions adopt various technologies (Health care careers directory, 2009).
