 Introduction

            It has been noted that for any counseling session to work, the counselor must understand and appreciate the culture of the clients or participants in the counseling process. This works to make the process effective and helpful to all those who are involved. In this text, I analyze Annalise’s decision to start the counseling process with the husband before talking to the wifes and lastly the children. I will also look at the structure of the therapy session and its impact on the wifes response on the same.

Therapy session structure

According to Tewari (2008), marriage is in a large way influenced by the underlaying culture of the couple an with that in mind, any counseling process should be designed with that important concept in place. In Asian- American couples, there is a significant value placed on the family as a unit. Each marriage partner has a role to play as long as the marriage is concerned. Husbands generally are charged with the duty of taking care of the family basic needs whereas the wife is expected to raise children and take care of familial and household matters. As such, Annalise’s decision to start with the husband is in order as in Asian-American couples, most of the familial decisions that bound the whole family are taken by the husband. This is what the underlaying Asian-American culture dictates. Tewari (2008) argues that for Asian-American couples, women are expected to be submissive. Hence in this particular scenario, Annalise’s decision to start with the husband will act to enhance the wifes participation in the counseling process.

Conclusion

It is important to note that the the preferences of culture should be incorporates in a counseling session for the process to be efficient as well as effective. Annalise’s decision is hence not only timely bet welcome.
