“The Humanistic Tradition Volume II (6th Ed.)” by Gloria K. Fiero is a perfect depiction of the creative legacy of humankind. Fiero has used numerous illustrations and literary sources that can be accessed easily. The illustrations and sources clearly show that the arguments presented are accurate, sound, and logical.

The humanities survey presented in the book takes a global viewpoint and enables a reader to clearly comprehend the relationship between diverse global cultures. The economic, social, and political contexts out of which the most memorable achievements of history emerged have been examined in the book (Fiero, 2010). Therefore, one aspect that I like about the introduction is that it clearly sheds light on what the reader should expect from the book content. It creates a perfect context for the book.

A positive aspect about the book with respect to its examination of protestant reformation is that adequate background information has been presented. Some of the political and social factors that triggered the reformation include renaissance, societal breakdown because of Hundred Years’ War, Black Death, etc, and rise of nation states and European decentralization (Fiero, 2010). What I dislike about this section is the fact that the author failed to include exhaustive information on weaknesses of Catholicism and Catholic Church. For instance, the author ought to have given examples of abuses and corruption of power in the Church such as selling of church offices and sale of indulgences as well as other types of forgiveness.

I liked the book because the author has exclusively examined the aspect of counter-reformation. This is also referred to as the Roman Catholic Reformation, whereby the Council of Trent called for a change in various aspects. A call for moral reform of the clergy and strengthening of the structures of the church are among the key examples. Establishment of Jesuits society under Loyola and proclamation of dogmas were also called upon. The degree of success and failure of counter-reformation can be clearly established from the book (Fiero, 2010). Generally, Fiero has achieved to convey the intended message to the readers.
