Importance of Diversity
Introduction
Diversity describes a state of noticeable heterogeneity in which different things or people co-exist. The world is a global stage on which different people act together in a bid to facilitate success. In order to work together all people from different backgrounds are required to embrace inclusiveness and diversity. Cultural differences should not act as stumbling blocks to success, but rather as a necessary feature for exploration that must be fulfilled to enhance human equality (Mathias, 1978).
Therefore, diversity provides equality to humanity and this is a principle recognized in natural human justice. Through the acceptance of diversity peaceful co-existence is also fostered. Organizations such as businesses and academic institutions may benefit greatly from having members of greater diversity and from different backgrounds (Mathias, 1978).
Diversity in the workplace provides a wider talent pool by incorporating people from diverse backgrounds in terms of race, creed and culture. These diverse people bring different experiences and knowledge to the organization which in turn, taps into this pool of talent. Employees in an organization also get an opportunity to share information from their countries such as market demographics, cultural traits and socioeconomic trends (Ehow.com, 2010).
This helps in building the knowledge base of an organization. The employees are also able to imbibe good working traits from other cultures and races, and this furthers the success of the organization. The access to different competencies, skills and capabilities from diverse employees also enhances the productivity of an organization. Interaction and co-mingling fosters better global citizenry and peace because it builds understanding amongst people. Sharing and regular interaction reduces prejudices and reduces negative discrimination through the creation of understanding. Therefore, diversity is an element that fosters understanding and peace and enhances better performance and learning in both business and academic institutions (Ehow.com, 2010).
