            Advertisement plays an important role in many countries. For example, advertisement is important in United Kingdom as it helps in the growth of business. Most businesses in the country rely on advertising to increase their sales and enhance growth. In addition, the businesses rely on advertising to promote their products and services. The demand for advertising services has led to development of the industry and hence created jobs. There are various jobs available in the advertising industry. The jobs include graphic design, communication jobs etc. This paper analyzes the advertising industry in UK and graphic design jobs in the industry.


Discussion

The advertising industry in United Kingdom is considered one of the largest service industries in the country. The advertising industry in the country is valued at £19 billion. The advertising industry accounts for 7% of United Kingdom economy. The advertising industry uses paid for space in the media outlets to advertise products and services and hence change the attitude of the groups. The advertising industry in the country has experienced a rapid growth for the last few years. The industry experienced slow growth in 2009. The growth in the industry reduced by 12%. The profits in the industry also reduced and this affected growth of many companies in the industry. However, a new research has shown that the advertising industry will experience growth. The growth rate in the industry has moved from 0.4% to almost 2.3%.The growth is associated with the increase in advertising services in the country. The demand for advertising services in the country has increased and this has led to increase in investments (Stanley, 2003).


There are different jobs that are found in the advertising industry. For example, graphic design and online communication jobs. Graphic design involves the creation of programs   and printing materials that convey message to certain audience. Graphic design refers to a process through which communication is developed and products are produced. Graphic design is used to produce logos and branding. In addition, it is used to produce websites and other print media. For instance, it is used to generate newspapers and magazines. Moreover, graphic design is used to produce advertisements and product packaging. Graphic design has become common in the advertising industry.


Graphic designers plan, examine and create visual solution to communication issues. Graphic designers find methods that can be used to communicate message using print media and electronic media. The graphic designers are supposed to produce promotion displays and packaging brochures for products. In addition, they are supposed to create signs and systems for companies and governments (Tibbs &Beattie, 2010). Further, graphic designers develop materials that are used in the internet. For instance, they develop content for web pages. The content is displayed through the internet. Also, the graphic designers develop content for interactive media and multimedia programs.


In addition, graphic designers produce credits that appear after a television program or before the program. When designing, the graphic designers are required to identify the needs of the customer. In addition, they are supposed to identify the message being created. That is the content and the target audience. Identifying customer requirements and the message being conveyed is vital as it helps them plan well. This ensures the advertisements created meet the objectives of the company. After identifying the needs, they are supposed to gather information that can be used to design advertisements (Hodgson, 2009).


The developments in the advertising industry have led to increase in job opportunities in the industry. For example, the development in technology has led to development of new careers. For example, it has led to growth of communication jobs in the advertising industry. This is mainly due to development of internet technology. The internet technology has enabled businesses to advertise their products online through the social media. A large percentage of businesses use different types of social media to market their products. For example, they use face book, twitter and my space. This is because of the benefits that are linked with social media. Hence, the communication jobs are likely to increase in future due to growth in internet technology (Trotman publishing, 2001).


Apart from leading to growth of communication jobs, the technological development has led to development of graphic design jobs. Developments in new technologies have opened new job opportunities for graphic designers. This is through the growth in social media marketing. Graphic designers play an important role in developing advertisement messages through the social media (Ace &Chartered institute of marketing, 2001). They are supposed to create advertisements that are used to market products and services in the internet. Most of the businesses rely on graphic designers to market their products  and services via the social media. For example, the graphic designers develop web content that is used in advertising. They also develop logos and signs for the companies as stated above.


The growth in online advertisement might have a lot of benefits to graduate students who want to be graphic designers. This is because they will have a better chance of getting jobs. Though the growth in technology has a positive impact on graphic designers, it also has a negative impact. For example, the growth in online advertising might affect the print media and hence lead to loose of jobs. Most people have started using the internet for advertising, but not the print media. This is because many people in the country are able to access the internet and social networking sites. Many people prefer to use the internet to read news and get any other information instead of reading newspapers. Hence, graduate students should have the right expertise so as to be able to get jobs as graphic designers. They should be able to cope with the changing technology and advertising methods so as to be able to retain their jobs (Kloss &Abdullah, 2002).


The working conditions for graphic designers vary. Also, the places of employment are different. Graphic designers who are employment in large advertising companies and publishing companies work in rooms that are well lit. They also work in a comfortable condition. In addition, the graphic designers work regular hours. On the other hand, graphic designers who work part time in small firms do not work regular hours. They have to plan their time well so as to be able to work in the organization and also serve clients outside the organization. Such designers work for longer hours than those employed in large companies. The working environment for the part time designers is not good as they work in congested rooms. For example, they can work from the company’s office or the client’s office. Also, they have to work from home (Mueller, 2010).


In addition, the designers have to work in the evening and weekends so as to be able to meet the deadline. The development in the advertisement industry has changed the working environment or graphic designers. For example, the development in technology has helped improve the working environment and conditions for the graphic designers. This is because graphic designers are able to work anytime anywhere. For instance, they can work in the organization or from home. The computer technology has made computers available and thus influenced the working environment and conditions. Graphic designers can use computers to work from home or any where else.


It has also made it easy for the graphic designers to meet deadlines as they are able to allocate adequate time to complete their work. The number of graphic designer who were self employed in 2008 and 2009 were almost 25%. The rest were employed in the advertising industry. Part time graphic designers earned $20 per hour in 2006. Those who had other skills in advertising and web development earned almost $90 per hour or more. The salary for graphic designers has increased greatly for the last few years. This is because of the great job the graphic designers do in the advertisement industry (Coyle, 2002).


Graduate students should have the following qualifications. First, graduate students wishing to become graphic designers should have a bachelor’s degree in graphic design or any other filed that is related.  In addition, they should have computer related skills. For example, they should be familiar with computer graphics and any other software used in design. They should also have good problem solving skills so as to be able to solve advertising problems. They should have good communication skills and show a high level of creativity. Having the right skills makes it easy for the designers to compete with other people in the industry.


It also helps improve productivity and sales in the advertising companies and hence the advertising industry. Good communication skills make it easy for the designers to interact with clients in the industry and hence enhance customer satisfaction. Additionally, being familiar with computer graphics is important as it helps the designers in online advertising. In order to offer effective online advertising services, the designers are supposed to be familiar with internet changes like social networking sites and how they are used (Richards, Botterill &MacRury, 2000).


Conclusion

The advertising industries in different parts of the world have grown. The growth in the industries is attributed to various factors. For example, the advertising industry in UK has grown for the last few decades. The growth in the industry is linked with the   changes in advertising methods. Most of the companies and business have changed their advertising techniques. The companies have replaced traditional advertising methods with online advertising. The companies mostly use online advertising. The growth is also associated with increase in demand for advertising services and technological development. The recent developments in the industry have created various job opportunities like graphic designs and online communication. Graphic designers provide advertisement services to different companies.
