The author of the text comes from a mixed background. The author is a Caribbean. She also has an American background as evidenced by the author’s comments about her grandmother. The author says the grandmother; Kay played Voodoo off her rocker. In addition, the family currently lives in Hawaii as depicted by various places such as Pearl City and Waipahu. Pear City and Waiphau found in the ‘Ewa District and City and county of Honolulu on the Island of O’ahu. The author, her grandmother, and aunt moved to Pearl City.
The author’s aunt is moving to Waipahu after recovering. Also, the author attended purple pearly city schools because of the low IQ and small plan objectives. There is evidence of Japanese ancestry in the word salad. The author has a Japanese ancestry. The parents sent the author to a Japanese school and shared rooms with her sister, Angela Alohalani Aiko Rosa. The names of the characters also show a Japanese ancestry. That is Angela Alohalani Aki Rosa, Paula Arakawa and Kay Toshiko. Thus, the author has a Japanese ancestry.
Further, the author has a Christian background. The author refers to Mary Virgin in the word salad. She refers to her grandmother’s, second non Virgin Mary marriage. Mary Virgin is Jesus mother and hence the author is familiar with Christianity. The author is exposed to westernization and globalization. The author has also attended modern schools in the United States. The author attended BYU College though the parents planned to send her to sacred hearts. BYU College is found in Provo, Utah and is a Christian private university.
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints manages the university. It is the biggest religious university in the country. On the contrary, her family practices voodoo. Voodoo is a religion practiced by people living in Haiti. It is the common religion in the area. Most people think Voodoo is superstitious because of the beliefs. However, the religion sounds superstitious to people not familiar with it just like Christianity. All people in Haiti practice the religion irrespective of their social class, education and experience. Though the family practices Voodoo, the author attends a Christian university.
The author is familiar with modern cars and medical disorders. The author is conversant with BMW convertible car loan and SUV. The author states that she went to live with her grandmother after approving her white BMW convertible car loan. The author refers to leukemia and tiredness sickness in the word salad. According to the word salad, the author says pictures about leukemia surrounded her aunt’s pictures. The author’s aunt has tiredness sickness. In addition, the author talks of her grandmother’s mental breakdown crisis. The grandmother talks to herself, and she is sent to Aiea mental institution.
The author is familiar with mental problems and institutions providing health care services to patients with mental disorders. The author might not be familiar with medical terms, but she has knowledge about the diseases. Lastly, the author refers to Disneyland and various movies such as Mel. The author is familiar with modern recreational facilities and characters such as Disney land. The author says her aunt looks as if she is married to Mel who is a character.
