This American life broadcast (produced by Public Radio International) on 10/09/2009 aired a show on the market place discussing on various issues regarding increasing healthcare costs and insurance policies.
In Act one on “Dartmouth Atlas Shrugged” Ira Glass explained his point of view on the why healthcare cost went sky rocketing in the previous decades. According to him, US have higher administrative cost than other countries because the healthcare structure with its insurers and contributors is so complex. Furthermore, Americans use expensive and high tech gear as well as expensive drugs. However, there is a new school of thought blaming a lot of the rising costs. The doctors get blamed for prescribing drugs that people do not need and doing too many procedures. Conversely, people think this all goes back to the work of one individual, a health care researcher Jack Wennberg. Alix Spiegel (NPR science correspondent) responds to Jack Wennberg’s medical problem.
Spiegel narrates about a 29 years old woman who underwent a quick surgery and her uterus and ovaries got removed, a total hysterectomy. This procedure got performed so quickly without the gynecologist performing enough examination on her. Surprisingly, hysterectomy got performed on lots of women in 70’s, in which doctors had done unnecessary procedures. In performing these unnecessary procedures, many funds got used by this doctors and sources project that could be one of the reasons of increment on healthcare systems. On a different start, the physicians and the insurance companies contribute enormously on the rising healthcare costs. The insurance companies depend on the insured hospitals and patients; hence they cannot do much in reducing the healthcare costs. Insurance companies need to measure up with the hospitals to reduce on the healthcare costs. Nevertheless, the government to have a patent role in ensuring reduced cost in the medical insurance policy.
