MATHOLYMP: Before and After the Mathematical Olympiad
My life used to go according to a specific routine, especially when it comes to school because running of school activities has to follow the time table, and as a student I had to follow my school timetable. I was so serious about spending enough time to perfect everything I was doing in school, and I would allocate sufficient time when I am doing my school work such as projects, homework, and everything required to as my aim was to achieve the highest score in any school work I was doing..
One day, as I was in the first year of high school, my mathematics teacher came to inform me that she has to chosen two girls who were to participate in the mathematical training program in which I was one of them and the selection criteria was that only the superior students for international Mathematical Olympiad Saudi team were to be selected.
It was too unfortunate that I did not know anything about international Mathematical Olympiad Saudi team contest since it was the first time in that year for girls to be allowed to participate in such contest and despite the whole thing looking strange to me, I had no alternative, and I simply accepted the challenge; therefore, my immediate answer was yes with little drought.
When I got in, I found a total new world for sure, and I was neither expecting nor knowing that my life would take a total different direction without realizing it in that the world of Mathematics introduced a new definition of Math to me, and this actually appeared like a paradigm shift to my life from a mathematical perspective.
Practicing in solving Olympiad problems gave me a very crucial privilege of learning how to look and perceive many things in different angles and perspectives and view al things l and relate them to others in logical manner. All These things that I got the privilege to learn and interact with has enabled me to extend my life and enhanced my thinking prowess, thoughts and decision making which were initially looked huge, and this change actually have affected my whole future in a positive approach for sure.
As I was going through this changes in my life, I found it very hard part of my adventure, but with time, this experience I was undergoing helped me to know and understand myself better, my environment and nature in that I discovered my skills, abilities, weakness and ways to alleviate the weakness, and this gave me a chance to prove that what we usually do not like is not bad but because we do not know and understand the importance of it as time goes.
As a result, I joined European Girls Mathematic contest (EGMO 2012) and got the bronze medal and this event have brought a major influential impact to my life and my future decisions in that I was lucky to be the first girl in the Arab world to get this Medal, despite the short and poor training period that I got.
