Table of Contents

First, the characters are always open to each other and this makes it easy to manage their relationships. For instance in the second scene Aileen informs Selby after leaving prostitution. Aileen decides to leave prostitution after being raped by a client. However, Selby is not happy with her as she is not able to support them. For instance, she is not able to pay bills. In addition in scene one Aileen who is a female prostitute meets Selby wall after moving to Florida.

The two meet in a gay bar in the Florida. Immediately after meeting, Alieen declares that she is not gay and talks to Selby. Selby does not resist, but she talks to Alieen as she thinks she is very protective. This forces Selby to invite him to spend the night with her. Openness makes it easy for the characters to establish their relationship and also maintain it through out the play (Davies 2005).Another factor that makes it easy for the characters to maintain their relationship is trust.

Trust plays an important role in any relationship as it helps build the relationship. Lack of trust destroys the relations. The characters in the play trust each other. This is evidenced by various things in the movie. For example, Selby invites Aileen to stay in her house because she trusts her and sees her protective (Davies 2005).The characters are also committed in their relationship and this makes it easy to manage their relationship. For instance, Aileen is committed to maintain her relationship with Selby.

This is evidenced after Aileen tries to go back to prostitution in order to support them. Though Aileen leavers prostitution to get a new job, she does not succeed as she does not have enough education. This forces her to go back to prostitution so as to earn money. Aileen uses the money she earns from prostitution with Selby as they indulge themselves in drinking and eating in fancy restaurants. This helps strengthen their relationships and also support each other (Davies 2005).

Moreover, Aileen is committed to protect their relationship after being arrested by the police. In the last scene, Selby realizes that Aileen has been involved in several murders after reading from the papers. As a result the two characters separate. Selby provides important information to the police about the incidents and Aileen learns that Selby is with the police.

Hence, Aileen confesses that she committed the murder so as to protect her lover and also to protect their friendship (Davies 2005).The characters value each other and this enables them to continue with their relationship. For instance, Selby values Aileen and thus decides to stay with her. In addition, Aileen values Selby and thus decides to protect her from her oppressive and over protective parents (Davies 2005).
